Description

The collectors' item album is in the Third State condition, meaning that the U.S. top cover has been stripped away.  The story is:
The controversy surrounding Yesterday and Today stems from its infamous original album art, known as the "butcher cover". It featured the band in white smocks covered in raw meat and dismembered baby dolls.
The uproar quickly forced the record label, Capitol Records, to recall all copies. The details of the controversy and its aftermath are below:

  • Meaning and Motivations: Shot by avant-garde photographer Robert Whitaker, the band claimed the image was a protest against the Vietnam War and Capitol Records' practice of "butchering" their albums for the North American market (rearranging tracklists and cutting songs).
  • Public Uproar: Deejays, distributors, and fans were appalled. The imagery was widely considered shocking, violent, and tasteless, prompting retailers to refuse to stock it.
  • The Recall: Capitol Records recalled roughly 750,000 copies, costing the label a massive sum. Instead of destroying the sleeves, the label pasted a benign photo of the Beatles sitting around a steamer trunk over the original artwork.
Because of the recall, surviving copies of the original artwork are incredibly rare and highly prized. The records are classified by collectors in "states":
  • First State: The untouched, unbanned butcher cover (extremely rare and valuable).
  • Second State: The butcher cover with the "trunk" cover pasted over it.
  • Third State: Copies where fans or collectors have carefully peeled off the trunk cover to reveal the butcher image underneath.
