On offer here is a superb example of a VERY rare U.K. pressing of The Beatles, Yellow Submarine. This is a genuine 1st MONO edition from 1969 on the 'Dark Apple' label; with the two red horizontal lines on the sleeve rear; and without 'Patents Pending' on the bottom flipback. It is indisputable that the Yellow Submarine album sold in significantly fewer numbers than any other original Beatles album; it is similarly unarguable that mono copies sold in much smaller quantities than the stereo edition (by 1969, mono LP's had largely gone the way of the dodo insofar as the record-buying public was concerned), in fact if a contemporary customer wanted the mono edition of Yellow Submarine, it usually was only available via special order. Yellow Submarine was the last Beatles album to be released in mono. As a consequence, securing an original mono pressing of Yellow Submarine, in excellent condition, is becoming harder and harder to achieve today.

The overall quality of the album being auction is excellent and the supplied images will bear this out. The package is complete with the following vital features:

  • Uncommon mono edition
  • Laminated 'Garrod & Lofthouse' tri-fold flipback outer sleeve
  • two horizontal red lines on rear of sleeve (later pressings had only one red line)
  • No 'Patents Pending' wording on bottom flipback
  • 1st pressing 'Dark Apple' unsliced side 1 label
  • Original black die-cut inner sleeve
  • Early XEX 715-1 1T & XEX 716-1 1P matrices/stampers
Condition:
The vinyl is in exceptional condition. As with all 'used' records, especially those of this vintage, there are marks of some sort. However, any such blemishes on this LP are limited to only 2 or 3 light hairlines, 2 or 3 very light (and tiny) scufflines, and only the fewest light paper scuffs (visible under strong light). Both sides of the vinyl exhibit a 'just pressed' appearance and sheen. The record is flat and free of any warping.

I do not possess a record player so I cannot describe the aural qualities of the album. However, going on a visual examination of the condition of the vinyl and grooves, the absence of obvious scratches (whether light or deep), the well-kept condition of the overall package, I can see no reason why the playback experience would be in any way marred beyond the limitations intrinsic to the vinyl recording medium (things such as frequency response, signal to noise ratio, et al).

The record labels are in superb condition. The supplied pictures speak volumes regarding the condition of the labels. There has been NO retouching applied to ANY of the pictures; nor have any part of either of the labels themselves been touched-up with marker pens, paint or glue.

The album sleeve is in an overall super, flat, condition. The spine is also in fine condition, the text being fully clear and unworn; flipbacks are tight with a bit of bumping on one (see pics). One corner has taken a small bash (see pics). Again, the supplied pictures illustrate more about the condition and appearance than I could write. I have endeavoured to show any shortcomings with, or imperfections in, the sleeve. NO writing, NO labels, NO stickers, NO rips, NO holes, NO splits, NO near-splits (been caught with that one on a few occasions); NO water stains, NO warping, NO odours. What blemishes there are are limited to one or two tiny spots here and there.

The black die-cut inner sleeve is in excellent condition and without any tearing or splitting. It isn't mint with regard to flatness but it is certainly not physically damaged in any way.

This record is offered as is. I do not claim that it is in 'mint', or even, 'near mint' condition so please do not bid in the vain hope that it will miraculously transform beyond what the pictures illustrate.
