Description

BEATLES UK - Sgt Pepper, one EMI box Mono with a ‘red eye’ sleeve !.

PMC 7027 – rare black and silver, one EMI box, Mono Parlophone labels.

A UK pressing in original condition featuring:

1. hard to find one EMI box Mono record labels. During the middle of 1969 in the UK, EMI  were going through their Mono to Stereo change over, with the new concept of Stereo recording techniques it was thought at the time that there would be no need or demand for Mono records anymore. However EMI made the decision to design and print a very small number of Mono, one EMI box labels for just three Beatle LPs, Sgt Pepper being one of them. Seems curious now, that why should EMI go to all the trouble to design and print a new record label to in turn only press so few records with this label ?

2. the main sleeve is unique, I have not seen or heard of another, on the photo of George Harrison on the inner gatefold sleeve, George can be seen to have a red eye !  did George at the time of the photo shoot have an eye infection ?, or had he received a black eye some weeks earlier ?. Is this a ‘Proof sleeve’ that was discarded by EMI, then for EMI to use the sleeve at the very last moment to get rid of their old Mono stock… intrigue indeed. The ‘red’ area around George’s eye is printed ‘under’ the laminate.
