SUMMARY:

This is an unusual copy of the 1980 Music For Pleasure re-issue of the 1st volume of the Rock ‘N’ Roll set originally issued in 1976 as a double album on Parlophone (PCSP 719).

In 1980 the set was re-issued as two separate albums on EMI’s MFP budget label.

However, this copy contains the music for the first side of Volume 1 coupled with the music for the second side of Volume 2 !

The labels and the sleeve’s track listing are correct for Volume 1. It’s the vinyl that contains the error.

Clearly the stamper plates being used at the time of pressing became mixed up. The Matrix Number pressed into the vinyl’s run-out area on Side 2 should read SKBO 11537-1B-1 but is in fact SKBO 11537-2B-1. The matrix numbers printed on the labels are correct for Volume 1.

I am unable to say how many copies like this might have slipped past the pressing plant’s quality control process but I have not yet seen another advertised. As an estimate of the number that might have been produced it is generally understood that stamper plates were good for about three hundred copies of each record before they needed replacing, so I suspect that around this number might have been pressed. Just how many copies might have slipped out I have no way of telling. This could be one of a few hundred or it might be unique. I could claim it is very rare – and It might be – but I won’t, as I can’t substantiate this. Certainly though it is unusual.

This unusual example of this LP is in great condition, especially the vinyl (see below). I am confident the successful bidder will be pleased with this record.

CONDITION:

(Gradings summary shown further down this listing)

VINYL: Both sides have been play-checked and grade as Excellent (audio) as set out in the summarised Grading Notes further down. Visually the vinyl grades at Excellent with full gloss sheen. The condition of the labels (also see below) suggests to me the record was played infrequently and handled with care.

OUTER SLEEVE: A Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve in strong VG condition with no splits, tears, stickers or writing.

INNER SLEEVE: The EMI inner sleeve has no splits, tears, stickers or writing. It has a light mottled appearance which may be due to long-term storage in the outer sleeve. On the other hand it might just be a print effect EMI were trying. It's perfectly clean though.

LABELS:  The labels are clean and unmarked (no stickers or writing). Both sides bear some light evidence of spidering (where the label has momentarily come into contact with the top of the spindle when placed on the turntable). No spindle wear is evident.

Notes about my Records

Record Gradings

The gradings I use are those defined by Record Collector, sometimes supplemented by + or – signs for fine-tuning.  For example an otherwise Excellent record with light scuff marks which are purely cosmetic and have no impact upon audio quality might merit an EX- rating rather than a wholesale downgrading to VG.   At the end of the day record gradings are always subjective, but I try hard to be accurate.  Record Collector defines seven gradings ranging from Mint down to Bad.  I seldom offer a record in anything less than Very Good condition unless it is particularly rare or collectable. These are the definitions I use:

Mint (M): The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.  The cover and any extra items (eg booklet, poster, lyric sheet) are in perfect condition.  Sealed or unplayed items should be Mint.

Excellent (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.  The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good (VG):  The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.  Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good (G):  The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.  The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Lower grades are defined but I rarely use them.

My assessment of a record's condition is based on my experience of 25 years occasional trading (record fairs, mail order, retail sales and eBay).
