RAMBLIN' JACK'S REEL TO REEL (RTR) GRADING:As you know, the grading systems of any given subject is always relative to the discretion of the seller/owner. For those of you who never have received an item from ramblin-jack, to judge, at least, one item with our grading and be able to discriminate our 'eye' relative to the product, the following grading guide may be beneficial:
ORIGINAL TAPE ON REEL:
After inspection and review, ALL ACCEPTED 'opened box' magnetic tapes are rated MINT - (mint minus). We 'listen to' all tapes and do not sell any RTR's with sound problems. The sound on all our tapes are guaranteed faultless. All tapes sold are complete without any missing tracks, etc. No substitute recording has been added to replace prior owner accidental erased sections. After-market leader tape material will be left as is, as will be auto-reversed sensing tape if evident. 'Blank' factory tape before or after the music may have been shortened from the original length.
ORIGINAL SHRINKWRAPPED BOX/TAPE:
Factory Sealed boxes are graded MINT (both tape and box) and are left unopened with all it's original shrinkwrap intact. Factory Sealed with original (not redo) shrink-wrap, whether or not the shrink is torn, busted etc., but a shrink-wrap 'flaw', if appropriate, would be mentioned on auction. The box in the shrink is assumed perfect, and any damages to the box, if seen through the shrink-wrap would be noted. Incidentally, the MINT category is not returnable under the normal ramblin-jack guarantee. As we do not know what the item is like within the wrapped article. Any non shrink-wrapped boxes with original closure tape tabs on edge of box will be automatically graded MINT- , regardless of whether it appears unopened or not.
ORIGINAL OPENED BOX/REEL:
MINT- (mint minus)
INVESTMENT QUALITY. This is a box that is "practically perfect". Ultra, ultra minor edge wear is accepted in this category. Appears 'just opened'! No smudges, stains, writing, tears, weakness in box integrity, label breaks, edge splits, etc. No box corner breaks/splits***. Only original factory flaws such as minor box distortion, minor label air bubbles and box labels that are a little 'out of square' are acceptable to be rated in this category if all the other criteria are met.
VG+++
INVESTMENT QUALITY. Extremely nice condition. The only difference between this category and MINT- is that there are some of the above mentioned 'issues' within this category, but certainly nothing objectionable. No box corner breaks/splits***, edge splits, structural damage or label breaks. Allowed; 'very discrete' pen markings, ala 'owner initials', ultra minor smudging, ultra tiny staining (hardly noticed), ultra tiny label breaks along edges of box, but nothing overly apparent.
VG++
Very nice condition. No box corner breaks/splits***. Edge splits may be very minor only. Writing may be evident. Smudges, staining, and all the issues of above may be evident but not "a lot" of these problems together. Noting that is regrettable. Still a fine tape to own and one that can only be faulted next to one that is rated as above, (MINT, MINT-, or VG+++).
VG+
Very good condition. Here is the category that could be defined as one in which; the box has problems but nothing that could make an owner extremely disappointed, in that, the condition of this box is better than 90% of any other tape sold on ebay. No box corner breaks/splits***. May have small label breaks on edges of box, may have ultra small seam splits, bookshelf edge fading (minor) may be present. Very small stains etc. Never many 'combinations of these problems' in this category will be tolerated.
VG
Good condition. The lowest quality box grade that we sell. An original box that contains a MINT - magnetic tape inside!!! May have large owner lettering/marking, minor box aging, minor box fading, label flaws, small seams splits, minor staining, minor smudges, water damage may be evident but listed etc. Certainly not considered a 'trashed box'. No box corner breaks/splits***.
*** No RTR boxes will be sold with broken corners. All other RTR's with 'less than' the above gradings will not be sold. We have been asked in the past if we have any RTR's available that fall short of our standards and we have to say no. Occasionally we sell just a Box or just a Reel/Tape separately because it's 'mate' fails to meet our standards.
FINAL NOTE:
On occasion there may be a box with a particular problem that would normally put it into a lower particular grading above but the rest of the box is so exemplary as to relegate the rating in a higher grading. An example: a box has large pen title writing on the inside cover, and would be graded VG but the rest of the box is so superior as to grade it in VG+++. This grading system is a guide only and the true proof of satisfaction remains with the buyer of a ramblin-jack RTR (or talking to someone who is)! Please ask any questions for verification of your expectations or lessening of your possible worries!
Tape and Tape Deck Maintenence
Only a properly maintained tape deck will permit you to realize the full potential of any tape. The following procedures are essential and will, if carefully observed, benefit both your tapes and deck.
It it very important to clean the tape heads on your open-reel deck after approximately every ten hours of use. The slightest oxide buildup can prevent intimate contact between tape and heads and result in a severe loss of the higher frequencies. Your capstan and pressure roller should also be cleaned. You should use either denatured alcohol or a head cleaning fluid that is specifically designated safe for use on any material, including rubber (some tape head cleaners can be harmful to your rubber pressure roller). Apply the fluid with a cotton swab or a soft cloth and make sure that no metallic object touches the heads.
It is also important to periodically demagnetize your playback and recording heads to prevent irreparable damage to your tapes. Magnetized heads can cause your tapes to become 'hissy' and to suffer permanent loss of their high frequencies. Although any of the demagnetizers designed or this purpose may be used, the Annis brand is judged excellent. Be sure to follow any manufacturer's instructions carefully and make certain that the Power Switch is in the off position. If you use your deck primarily for playing tapes, demagnetizing the heads once a month should be adequate; if however, you do a great deal of recording, you should demagnetize twice as often, or even weekly.
Magnetic tape is naturally very durable and will suffer damage only when subjected to extreme negligence or abuse. Do not expose your tapes to excessive heat or cold. Do not place tapes within two feet of strong magnetic fields such as those found in loudspeakers or operating motor-driven equipment such as air condtioners, vacuum cleaners, etc. Tapes should be stored in their upright position like books (prevents pressuring the tape to the reel edge) and only when under the normal tension of their natural playing speed, never in a fast-wound condition caused by rewinding or fast-forwarding the tape. For maximum physical protection, it is recomened that a 5 or 6 foot blank leader be spliced to the beginning of each tape. Splicing and/or sensing tape additions (enabling the auto-reverse feature found on some units) must be carefully positioned on the tape to prevent overlapping and 'blending' adhesive residue over onto the heads or other tape deck components.
The Ballad of Lil' Annie LoggLil' Annie Logg laid down between the two loudspeakers with Razor Face, Lay Down Sally and Ramblin' Jack.
Razor Face was just finishing retelling the conquest of Santa Rosa Peak and how it all seemed to come
together with the VW being the catalyst for the Age of Discovery. Was it the beginning of Enlightenment or
the climax? All of a sudden it didn't seem to matter; as Lil' Annie Logg capped his tale with lulling sweet
rhythms that put the group into an agreeable mindset."Wow, will it always be like this"? remarked Lay Down
Sally, repositioning her place near the ashtray. RJ said he hoped it would, but somehow things never stay
the same- "You know it's a transient thing, like products are always in flux to the whims of the market".
(You could always count on RJ getting tangential to a philosophical point). Razor Face just raised his head
off the floor a few inches and grunted. Now that his narrative was over he was taking it all in, his mind a
steel trap; details were continually tallied for future digestion/expulsion and there is nothing as important
as cataloging good times. He would recall years later that it was a shame that the market stank and the 'so
called' product was inferior and that it wasn't progress that drove us but consumption. But just now Lil'
Annie Logg strafed the air and churned out the remaining seconds of Fried Hockey Boogie. The Canned Heat
suddenly ran down. RJ finger passed it over to Razor Face and stumbled up to start a fresh Annie opus. But
what was it to be? RJ lived for this moment. The "pause that refreshes"! No instant gratification here.
His only fear was a possible plaintive request ('from the masses'). Were they thinking about it too???
Choices. His hands moved to the table. It could be preordained, he thought, by just reaching in the dark
until the fateful choice met his touch- that could be a gas. It might be that custom one he'd recently made
that played the dialogue tracks of "To Have and To Have Not" & "The Big Sleep" each simultaneously playing
from separate channels... that one was a mind f---er. Or was he to choose? The latter option won out. Lil'
Annie Logg was ready-threaded for her next blast off. "Break On Through"- yes, "Break On Through"! What
could be more appropriate? This was the break-through after all, wasn't it? The break-through of the whole
damn thing!?! Lil' Annie Logg was THE break-through and forever will be, as far as we were concerned. And,
it was the right choice. MRMOJORISIN!!! It could never be better than this, could it? Didn't we just figure
that one out? Or did we? In the sudden breeze of new thought, turning over fresh furrows (and covering over
recent revelations), and just before Lil' Annie Logg jolted the senses with her next offering, Lay Down Sally
proffered her own current thought aloud,,,"Which came first, Oreos or Hydrox"???
