GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2
AUSTRALIA
ORANGE 'TOP STEREO' 1-BOX LABELS
MUSIC-PUBLISHING 'ROYALTY' STAMPS ON 'SIDE 1' LABEL
As serious collector's of AU Beatles vinyl will be aware, the printing of individual Music-Publisher royalty stamps (e.g. LEEDS MUSIC, CASTLE MUSIC et al) on record labels was standard throughout the 1960's, wherein all EMI (Australia) Beatles vinyl labels featured one or more 'royalty' stamps, in the form of conspicuous text or icon, situated in the middle of the label and flanking the spindle-hole.
With the advent, in 1969, of the ubiquitous, and uniquely Australian, Orange 'Parlophone' label, royalty stamps were abandoned in exclusive favour of text credits incorporated in the label tracklists (which had already been a standard feature of labels for years anyway).
Despite the abandonment of royalty stamps, a tiny - and we are genuinely talking 'tiny' - number of AU Beatles LP's with royalty-stamp Orange 1-Box 'Parlophone' labels made it to market; some with royalty-stamp labels on both sides of the LP, and some with royalty-stamp labels on only one side.
To date, only TWO Beatles LP titles with royalty-stamp labels have been confirmed - Greatest Hits Volume 2 and Beatles Oldies. The absence, from eBay, of examples of one or other of the royalty-stamp labelled titles attest to their rarity.
Offered for auction is Greatest Hits Volume 2 with a 'Side 1' royalty-stamp label, and a standard 'Side 2' label. Is a 'crossover' LP such as this much rarer, or more common, than an LP with dual royalty labels? For collectors of Beatles vinyl, that is indeed the question.
CONDITION
LABELS: EX+ to NM - please take the time to look at the images provided; do not confuse the faults of the 'response' of my elderly camera, or the jpg compression artefacts, with the 'in the flesh' labels themselves. The labels are in excellent to near-mint condition.
VINYL: VG+ to EX-minus - flat and clean, the vinyl is marred by light scuffing (of the 'record removal/return' variety) here and there but without your actual 'rough handling' scratches or dirt. A nice sheen.
SLEEVE: VG+ to EX-minus - no writing, no tears, no seam-splits. A bit of ringwear; low-level 'bumping' of corners. The sleeve is definitely respectable but being so common, it can be easily replaced if considered not up to snuff. It is possible that the sleeve is not that which originally came with the record as a good number of contemporary sleeves had a wraparound 'STEREO' sticker at the top-left corner of the sleeve (front).
