Another from my personal collection of over 1000 UK Beatles Albums that I have accumulated over a period of more than 45 years or more! This is the 4th UK pressing of the Beatles album Please Please Me. The album is particularly rare not just for its stunning condition but because the cover was printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. Most covers that were issued with this album were printed by E.Day & co. Garrod & Lofthouse flipback covers for Please Please Me are the most sought after and rare to find but in this condition is very rare indeed. The original thick chunky slab of vinyl has barely been played no more than a handful of times in my opinion and the playing surface is near mint! The audio is absolutely stunning near as mint throughout and these early monos must be the only way to hear this album.
For any that know for me, The most important aspect of vinyl is the audio quality. This particular vinyl is truly exceptional for its condition but especially for its clean,clear audio very very special copy indeed. I have played many many copies over the years and very few stand out for me but this copy does.  A true rich bassey feel through out as perfect as could be when played with a dedicated mono cartridge in my opinion. This is complete with the original poly lined Emitex record sleeve with no splits or tears.

This is one of the best sounding copies of this album that I have ever heard! So clear and vibrant through out!!


Please Please Me is the debut album by the English rock band the Beatles. Parlophone rush-released the album on 22 March 1963 in the United Kingdom to capitalise on the success of the singles "Please Please Me" (No. 1 on most lists but only No. 2 on Record Retailer) and "Love Me Do" (No. 17).




Of the album's 14 songs, eight were written by Lennon–McCartney (originally credited "McCartney–Lennon"), early evidence of what Rolling Stone later called "[their invention of] the idea of the self-contained rock band, writing their own hits and playing their own instruments." In 2012, Please Please Me was voted 39th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."




In order for the album to contain 14 songs (the norm for British 12" vinyl pop albums at that time was to have seven songs on each side, while American albums usually had only five or six songs per side), 10 more tracks were needed to add to the four sides of their first two singles recorded and released previously. Therefore, at 10:00 am on Monday, 11 February 1963, the Beatles and George Martin began recording essentially their live act in 1963 and finished at 10:45 pm—less than 13 hours later. In three sessions that day (each lasting approximately three hours) they produced an authentic representation of the band's Cavern Club-era sound, with only a few minor overdubs and edits. Optimistically, only two sessions were originally booked by Martin and the evening session was an afterthought. Mark Lewisohn would later write: "There can scarcely have been 585 more productive minutes in the history of recorded music" Martin overdubbed the piano on "Misery" on 20 February and celesta on "Baby It's You" five days later.




Martin had initially contemplated recording the album live at the Cavern in front of the group's home audience and visited the Liverpool club to consider the technicalities on 9 December 1962 -- or, as more recent scholarship indicates, on 12 December 1962. But when time constraints intervened, he decided to book them at EMI Studios in Abbey Road instead and record them virtually live. Martin said, "It was a straightforward performance of their stage repertoire—a broadcast, more or less."




The day ended with a cover of "Twist and Shout," which had to be recorded last because John Lennon had a particularly bad cold and Martin feared the throat-shredding vocal would ruin Lennon's voice for the day. This performance, captured on the first take, prompted Martin to say: "I don't know how they do it. We've been recording all day but the longer we go on the better they get."




The song "Hold Me Tight" was recorded during these sessions, but was "surplus to requirements" and not included on the album. "Hold Me Tight" was recorded again on 12 September 1963 for With the Beatles.




The whole day's session cost around £400 (£10,000 as of 2014). George Martin said: "There wasn't a lot of money at Parlophone. I was working to an annual budget of £55,000." This budget had to cover all of the artists on Martin's roster. Individually, under a contract with the Musicians' Union, each Beatle collected a £7 10s (£7.50) session fee for each three-hour session.




Martin considered calling the album Off the Beatle Track before Please Please Me was released on Parlophone PCS 3042.





The album was recorded on a two-track BTR reel-to-reel tape deck, with most of the instrumentation on one track and the vocals on the other, allowing for a better balance between the two on the final quarter-inch tape mix-down in mono.







A stereo mix was made at the same time as the mono mix, with one track on the left channel and the other on the right, as well as an added layer of reverb to better blend the two tracks together. This was common practice for mixing stereo albums at the time.

The Vinyl

This is the original thicker , heavier chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest original pressings! (Later press are much more flimsier and less robust)! The vinyls playing surface is lovely and very clean indeed!

The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free of any warps. The vinyl has retained its original sheen from new in my opinion on initial inspection this looks like it has obviously not been played No more than a handful of times ever ,, in fact I can only see a handful of light  spider marks only to mention! Unbeleivable rare to find like this!  On close inspection any marks that could possibly be seen would be very light sleeve removal, to be honest I struggle to see a mark at all.  Importantly there are no audio sounding marks or needle marks that would cause any clicks ticks or or pops that I heard at all! (To be honest I find it hard to even see a blemish at all)

The audio quality

I have played this track for track at very loud volume prior to listing at very loud volume, importantly using a dedicated mono cartridge! From the moment that the needle hits the playing surface , it is obvious that this vinyl not only visually but audibly has only had very, very minimal play only! The audio is stunning cristal clear and vibrant, very bright and clear throughout without any signs of distortion at all and plays with a lovely deep bassey feel only found like this on early pressings! I would grade the audio near as mint in my opinion! (I don't think that you will find better very rich and vibrant through out)

The Labels

These are the original Parlophone labels feature  The K.T tax code is stamped on side 1 (Only Early press Correct for this variation)  ''The Parlophone Co...'' rim text (only 1st press) The labels are rich in colour and are very clean ! all text is fully readable. It is obvious to me that this vinyl has only had a handful of plays ever in my opinion. Amazingly I struggle to see no more than a handfull of light spider marks only on each side ,   the spindle hole is free of any  ware and of course is perfectly round!

The Record Sleeve

This is the original EMITEX poly lined sleeve no splits or tares just light creasing fading with age becoming fragile at the edges to mention. The vinyl is now always stored separately from the sleeve. This is how I have always stored my records.

The Cover

This Is The Original UK issue Garrod & Lofthouse flip back cover in absolutely stunning condition through out! No splits or tares. The original pinched ended spine  all text is readable!  No nasty ringware or rubbing! Any creases are minute hair lines at the spine to mention and minor half moon type in the middle and barely noticed at all unless looked for in my opinion. This cover is exceptionally white and super glossy like it was when new in my opinion.    The cover has always been separated from the vinyl and sleeve since purchased from new! The rear is also lovely and clean and bright very very rare to find indeed again any creases or marks are very feint and you would have to look for them to really notice in my opinion.!  no real ringware or nasty grubbyness! Unbeleivably rare like this! Graded at least excellent plus to very near Near Mint in my opinion!
