This is a very rare 12" long-playing acetate disc of the BBC broadcast on 2nd July, 1958 of "The Ballad Of John Axon", the story of an English steam locomotive driver who died in an accident on 9th February, 1957. This famous broadcast is: "The first of the Radio Ballads, The Ballad of John Axon concerns a steam-locomotive driver from Stockport, posthumously awarded the George Cross for an act of heroism in 1957 when he refused to abandon his runaway train and saved lives at the expense of his own."
"The BBC Radio Ballads were groundbreaking documentaries produced by Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker in the late 1950s and broadcast on the BBC Home Service. They were masterpieces of radio, weaving the voices of rarely-heard communities with songs written from and about the recorded experiences of the interviewees."
The story was set into song by Ewan MacColl, and in the broadcast he was assisted by many well-known performers from the folk & jazz world: Bert Lloyd - Isla Cameron - Fitzroy Coleman - Stan Kelly-Bootle - Dick Loveless - Charles Mayo - Colin Dunn - Dominic Behan - Peggy Seeger - Brian Daly - Jim Bray - Bruce Turner - Bobby Mickleburgh - John Cole - Terry Brown - Billy Loch etc.
For more information there are many sources on the internet such as http://www.setintosong.co.uk/downloads/PDF/rb_website_john_axon.pdf
The seller has no idea where this acetate came from, but he has owned it for a long time. Apart from stating the simple facts of its content on the labels, there is no other information about the detailed content. The disc is in good condition, by appearance, without any obvious "nasty" faults, and is being sold on that basis - it should transfer nicely to another medium.
