Back Street Crawler
'2nd Street'
Atlantic, UK, 1976
K50267
CONTAINS THE tragic final recording legacy of Paul Kossoff a record started before his death on March 19th 1976. The album was recorded posthumously with help from Stray Dog guitarist Snuffy Walden who happened to be in town recording at Island Studios.
Regarded by many as a fitting tribute to his career, the second Back Street Crawler album is a marked improvement upon the debut - showcasing a band sitting very comfortably somewhere between Free and Bad Company. The music is beautifully and carefully constructed, never complicated and always has room to spare. Kossoff's guitar is particularly sublime, squeezing out tight and soulful fills whilst never compromising the bands modus operation.
Apart from Koss, the most accomplished performance here is from vocalists Terry Wilson Slesser a man of great talent who's voice sits right in the same pocket as many of the early 70's British blues singers such as Paul Rodgers, Frankie Miller, Jimmy Dewer and David Coverdale. On tracks like 'Raging River' and 'Selfish Lover' he even touches the grace of Terry Reid and that, my friends, is a huge compliment.
Make no mistake, this is not a substandard dog end of a career final fling on Kossoff's part as the music here is grade-A enriched blues rock with the kind of soulful arrangments that make you weep in the knowledge that Koss would be checking out of this world for good.
A notoriously difficult album to locate these days and even tougher to find in this condition.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
