Sagarmatha Review
Amidst the cultural desert that is America's heartland, lays a tiny oasis called Lawrence, KS where music isn't simply played, it's born, lives and breathes. From '90s grunge alternatives like Paw and Stick to more recent indie rock standouts Ghosty or The New Amsterdams, more than a few trend-bucking musicians have called the streets of Lawrence home over the years. Stalwarts of said city’s scene for a decade now, The Appleseed Cast wave the flag of artistic innovation high and proud with their sixth disc, Sagarmatha.
Appropriately taking its name from the Nepali word for Mount Everest (literally meaning Head of the Sky), Sagarmatha is delivered in a wash of richly textured and layered soundscapes that seemingly come from above the clouds. From the spacey onset on opener "So The Little Things Go," the album's mood remains a serene one; though occasionally marked with juxtaposing moments of pondering melancholy and inspired triumph. More a product of vision than of instruments, Sagarmatha thrives on emotion and atmosphere – two attributes which are plentiful throughout its entirety.
With one open-ended passage flowing into the next, loosely tied together by sparse and haunting vocals, it's not possible to view this piece of work in a track-by-track sense. An album in the true sense of the word, Sagarmatha is a continual journey that carries you from the streets of Kansas all the way to the top of the world.
