Description
SARGAM - 'POP EXPLOSION SITAR STYLE!'
Classically trained sitar player Clem Alford formed Sargam in 1970 with two other musicians - Jim Moyes (guitar) and Keshav Sathe (tabla). Together they recorded this album inappropriately released as "Pop Explosion Sitar Style!"
This album was released without the band's permission in 1972 by Windmill Records without the band's consent or knowledge and added insult to injury by misspeling their name as "Sagram". It was sold in a ludicrous cover photograph bearing no relation to any band members or anything about them.
The album itself is a beautifully played and distinctive acoustic album that reflects many musical currents of the time, from Alexis Korner to Ravi Shankar. The complex rhythmic, sensitive tabla playing of virtuoso Keshav Sathe underpins all six instrumental tracks.
This genuine 6-track 12" Apple acetate of that album bears 'Apple Corps Ltd., 3 Savile Row..Custom Recording' typewritten labels on both sides.
The tracks are:
Side 1:
1. Becky's Dance
2. Morning Glory
3. Night King
Side 2:
1. Heavenly Feeling
2. Floating Haze
3. The Universal Form
The disc comes in a plain white cover.
CONDITION
Disc
Labels: EXCELLENT
Both are bright & undamaged with just a few small foxing spots on side 2 but no other significant blemishes.
Visual: VERY GOOD
Both playing surface are clean but do display several surface marks which are mostly fingernail scuff lines. However I can find no deep or feelable scratches on either side.
Play: GOOD
The sound quality overall is respectable. My careful play-check did reveal some light surface noise at the beginning of each side but no groove/play wear anywhere. The only major fault I found were 4 or 5 jumps on track 2 on side 2. Apart from that and an occasional click, there is little else of any significance to fault on this rare piece.
