When ‘Audience’ arrived on the rock scene in 1969 they had to create a whole new category of music so that they could be conveniently pigeonholed; their sound was thus labelled ‘Art Rock’.
The band’s influence over the years could never have been imagined at the time.
Their line-up defied the norm for a rock band, with a nylon strung acoustic guitar, saxophone, flute, and a more conservative back line of bass and drums, with Howard Werth’s unique vocals.
They played their first gig at the prestigious Marquee Club in Wardour Street, London after which they were immediately snapped up on a one album deal by the rather conservative Polydor Records. The album Audience (1969) was a great critical success, but met with commercial indifference.
Polydor, unsure of how to treat the band, withdrew their support. So when Tony Stratton Smith approached them with a view to joining Charisma Records they needed no second bidding.
He’d only just set up the label at that point and had only recorded a couple of things with Rare Bird and Van Der Graf Generator. So Audience were attracted by the idea of joining Charisma, because in many ways they were the first of the independent labels. Friend's, Friend's Friend was released in May 1970
Track Listing:
Side 1: NOTHING YOU DO / BELLADONNA MOONSHINE / IT BRINGS A TEAR / RAID
Side 2: RIGHT ON THEIR SIDE / EBONY VARIATIONS / PRIESTESS / FRIEND’S, FRIEND’S, FRIEND
LABELS: MINT - CLEAN, BRIGHT and FRESH with NO unwanted marks/writing and NO evident spindles
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original DEEP, GLOSSY, LIKE-NEW LUSTRE with just a couple of (very small) light marks per side NONE of which are of any major audio consequence. MINT(-)
VINYL Audio: CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH and VIBRANT SOUND. SUPERB AUDIO. There are NO scratches, NO sticks or jumps, NO distortion and NO groove-wear (its hardly been played at all). The record plays EXCELLENT++ (side one) / VERY GOOD++ (side two) (very strictly graded). Side One plays pretty much perfectly throughout but Side Two - although the vinyl looks superb - plays with some general intermittent light background ticks (not scratches but similar to static ticks). These are never loud or intrusive and more than likely are a characteristic of this first pressing - in fact looking back through my records for the last 4 years I have sold only ONE other Pink Scroll copy of this LP (that's how rare it is) and that had exactly the same issues, with a virtually identical description - general ticks on Side Two but no scratches - so these ticks are more than likely present on all first pressings - any confirmation of this would be much appreciated). After detailing all that the record still sounds absolutely SENSATIONAL and I think a finer first issue would be pretty hard to locate. All in all, a very, very fine UK first pressing
SLEEVE: The original 1970 UK stereo 1st issue E.J DAY gatefold cover is in EXCELLENT++ condition with minimal edge wear - BEAUTIFULLY CLEAN and BRIGHT, inside and outside. The sleeve still retains all its STRONG and VIBRANT colour with no unwanted marks/writing and the spine is straight true (there is no spine text). BEAUTIFUL FIRST ISSUE SLEEVE
