Description

AUDIENCE: 1969 self-titled debut album on the Polydor label in mear mint/mint- condition

British art-rock unit Audience was formed in London in 1969 by singer/guitarist Howard Werth, saxophonist Keith Gemmell, bassist Trevor Williams, and percussionist Tony Connor. Set apart from their contemporaries thanks to their use of acoustic guitar and saxophone, the group issued this, their self-titled debut LP in 1969 on the Polydor label. It was pressed in limited quantities and was not a commercial success, making an original copy in this kind of condition VERY unusual. They were signed to Charisma for their second release, 1970's "Friend's Friend's Friend", making this their only Polydor release.

This album is indispensable for fans of UK psych like Jethro Tull and Traffic and features stand-out tracks "Waverley Stage Coach" and "House On The Hill".

CONDITION:

The vinyl shows few signs of ever having been played....a spindle mark or two on either side. Under a strong light I can make out a couple of *very* light surface marks, most likely caused by the record being taken in and out of the inner sleeve. These are inconsequential and the record plays beautifully. There is a modicum of slight surface noise in between a couple of tracks, but I'm splitting hairs at this point. This record sounds fantastic. At the end of "House On The Hill" when Werth is really belting out the vocal, there is a hint of distortion, but it's entirely possible that this was on the original recording and was left on the track. Either way, it doesn't detract. This record is superb. I'm giving it a solid Near Mint grading.

The sleeve is astounding. It looks like it came out of the pressing plant yesterday. For an unlaminated 1969 Polydor sleeve this is remarkable. There is a shade of ringwear at the bottom left-hand corner of the back cover which is barely noticeable. I'm giving the sleeve an incredible Mint Minus grading.

Please excuse the partial sleeve scan below....I can't fit an entire sleeve on my scanner. Suffice to say that the sleeve is perfect!
