Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions with any handling traces minuscule. Any spindle traces are tiny and faint. Hardly any at all in fact, without doubt the best ‘Death Walks Behind You’ labels I have ever seen and the record plays superbly.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. Around average for it’s era.

Rarity: Scarce: although the cover on this copy has some creasing and mild wear, the record itself is exceptional and never an easy one to find as such.

Brief Info: The second Atomic Rooster album, considered by many as their very best including myself. A dark and brooding album of quality heavy progressive rock, it sold fairly well in the UK peaking at No 12 in the charts. In the US, this was their first release with only modest sales peaking briefly at No 90. Without doubt, this was the band’s best line-up, they recorded one other album together, the also excellent ‘In Hearing Of’, but then the wheels fell-off with disagreements on musical direction and Hammon and Du Cann left to form Hard Stuff. Du Cann’s superb guitar-work is evident throughout, some reminiscent of his work with the legendary, if short-lived Andromeda. Crane’s organ-work is also impressive and rarely sounded better. This a much sort-after prog mini-classic and although it does show up, it’s more often seen in very disappointing conditions - the cover especially is ruthlessly revealing and prone to all forms of wear. This one is not perfect by any means but I have seen far, far worse. The record more than compensates and without any doubt, has hardly been played and offers fantastic throughout. So if quality sound is more of a priority over a cover, this copy could be just for you.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+, one or rock’s most unforgiving covers with even Very Good examples being above average seen.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: marked down mainly for creasing. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth sufaces, printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and including the B&C credits.

Cover Front: A very difficult sleeve to say the least. The main issue on this front is creasing near the bottom right corner area including the corner tip itself. The bottom opposite corner tip has creased too. I would be sure the right area has received a dink in the past as the back almost reciprocates the front. In terms of rubbing, this has very modest amounts and far less than average. This main seen on the left and right edges, my photo actually emphasising more than is actually present. The graphic is near pristine and in terms of ageing or rubbing, this has front has some of the least I have seen – the around moderate creasing, as stated, is the main issue – but hardly bad truth be told.

Cover Back: Some light patchy rubbing and mild rim rubbing. The crease is again present on the left corner but less than the front. Overall, for this one, a very respectable back indeed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb artwork and with any traces of wear very light indeed, both faces look quite impressive. A little waviness on the left side and those creases again apparent in a reasonable mild way.

Top Edges: Very little apparent wear, not ruling out some possible tipping-in - not obvious if so and I retterate quickly, not by me.

Bottom Edges: Light scuffy type rubbing and not perfectly straight, not dissimilar to abover overall.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: Solid, robust and wide. Still straight and with minimal compression and folded square. A fine natural central fine crease line and all text present with barely any traces of wear – this a huge bonus. Most are seen whitened with high percentages of text eroded or totally missing. Again, I suggest some light tip-ins by previous owner.

Corners: The corners have creasing ranging from light to moderate (or slightly above on the bottom right). Fair to fine shape retained and some tipping-in almost certain but not badly done.

Cover Summary: A very decent cover, the many pluses do outnumber the negatives but clearly not one for the more discerning collector. Still, covers cannot be played, and the record is really impressive, so you pays your money, you takes your choice.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the original unlined plain solid white inner is included in super condition. Aged little and still a fine shade of white, not brown, any seam adhesive darkening light and few. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): side one is little short of Mint as made. Side two has a small surface mark that has not sound and this a super visual copy. Clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. All evidence, including superb sound suggests hardly even played. A fantastic B&C record that more than compensates any of the cover’s shortfalls. A possible upgrade copy that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality prog classic plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean and enjoyable pressing. Do not this for granted, B&C records could be somewhat variable in pressing quality, often they can, and do crackle. This record gives a great account and was a real delight to listen to. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly reitterated by the clean and focused sound. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful prog record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
