Label/Format: B&C – black with green logo. Both sides are heavily textured and have the deep inner ring ridge. .

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition and little short of reference standard. Very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks, hardly any really, I have seldom seen more striking B&C labels ever.

Cat Number: CAS 1010.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 162 grams. A very heavy pressing, way over average.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce, probably the most elusive within their catalogue to find and decent B&C copies are harder still. The first issues had a very different mix to subsequent isssues. Known as the ‘flute’ mix and the ‘guitar’ mix. Second issues had added guitar to some songs to give a fuller sound. But many fans prefer the original and far rarer first recording. This copy is the rare ‘flute’ mix. Also never easy to find very quiet pressings on this label. This copy has a little gentle surface sound in places, but not too much and overall sound is enjoyable (unless silence is non-negotiable).

Musicians: Vincent Crane; Nick Graham and Carl Palmer.

Brief Info: Debut album and an important part in the development of British progressive rock. This album features Vincent Crane formerly of the Crazy of World of Arthur Brown who was to become the stalwart member of this band. Also present was Carl Palmer who soon left to help form Emerson, Lake and Palmer, his percussion work on this album is magnificent throughout. Heavy keyboard driven progressive rock, this debut was seldom bettered by them and is essential for all prog fans. I reitterate again, this is the original mix version WITHOUT the added guitar parts that came a little later.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A single unlaminated cover with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: A difficult cover seldom even a decent very good. This has little wear with any rubbing faint with any marks gentle and light. A few tiny tone spots and a little on the spine edge. The lack of penetrating ringwear, especially with a very heavy thick record inside for around 40 years, is unusually good news.

Cover Back: The back is similar and again devoid of ugly ringwear. Both sides have avoided creasing and her again any marks are light and faint.

Top Edge: One tiny tone spot, any rubbing shows little on a white surface.

Bottom Edge: Some rubbing towards the right corner, being a white area, it shows little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with little wear. Slight discolour and faint rubbing on the gently tapered ends. All text is nigh-on perfect.

Corners: Again, any rubbing on white area corners shows little and all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A fine excellent example of a difficult cover, the best I have seen for many years in fact. NOTE: this one has no ‘extra’ guitar credits on the back. The plain white unlined inner has aged and discoloured and has two corner creases.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better, this looks very little played. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, jet black and very heavily pressed on very thick vinyl. This has all the hallmarks of those very early pink Island records with the same style textured labels. With scrutiny under light, very fine and faint surface traces or minor hairline. Few will be found much better and most collectors will enjoy it’s quality appearance.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare original mix original record plays mostly very well but does have light traces of surface sound in places – so not for the perfectionist – that said, it will prove hard to find much better or lesser played. Nothing loud at all but evident lightly on the odd quite passage on side one. B&C pressings are known not to always be the very best pressed or quiet – variable is the word – but this overall plays very well indeed. I remind I play on very sensitive equipment too. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed and powerful sound. Clearly the band wanted a fuller, richer sound on subsequent pressings, but many fans prefer the original sound as here. Guitar parts were added later. No pops or noteworthy clicks were heard and any minor surface sound is simply within the pressing. It is likely few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure and this was a generally pleasure to hear again. Little, if anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful debut. This original copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and unless total silence is mandatory, it merits strong recommendation.

What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
