Dorothy Ashby is the famed Afro harpist who makes such mellifluous jazz that it will slow your heartbeat to nothing. As well as working solo she lined up on occasion with peers of her era. In a Minor Groove is one of two such albums she made in 1958 with flautist and saxophonist Frank Wess. Her fellow Detroit native Herman Wright was con bass and Roy Haynes was on drums, and between them they crafted some impossibly well-swung sounds with ethereal glissandos, subtle harp-based rhythms and mesmerising melodic threads which are woven through jazz standards like 'Alone Together' and 'Yesterdays.'
