This album is a big surprise. Journey was released in 1973 on Polydor (the one with the rose on the cover), but the American version, on Passport Records features a totally different cover. This proved to be Arthur Brown's final album with Kingdom Come. This is basically a trimmed down and revamped version of Kingdom Come, with Arthur Brown, as always, as well as bassist Phil Shutt and guitarist Andy Dalby from the previous lineup. For a new keyboardist, Brown simply hired a Detroit native named Victor Peraino, and instead of bothering with a drummer, Brown himself used a Bentley Rhythm Ace drum machine. This is by far one of the earliest releases using extensively the drum machine. And also the biggest surprise is the keyboards themselves. Peraino used an ARP 2600 synthesizer and Mellotron, but no Hammond organ. Theramins are also used. Journey finds Brown and Kingdom Come venturing more in to space rock territory, like many of the Krautrock bands of the time, or perhaps Hawkwind. "Time Captives", "Gypsy", and "Superficial Roadblocks" are all proof of this. Gone are the the occasional British cultural references (like on "Brains" from Galactic Zoo Dossier, or an excerpt of "God Save the Queen" on "City Melody" on their previous album, just called Kingdom Come), in its place, strong sci-fi and space themes. Each of these songs have extended passages, great guitar work from Andy Dalby, plenty of spacy electronic effects, and enough Mellotron to keep fans of that instrument happy. I noticed on "Gypsy" Andy Dalby borrowed the guitar riff from "Gypsy Escape" from Galactic Zoo Dossier, but that's no surprise, it's his guitar riff, and it was from Kingdom Come. "Spirit of Joy" is the more pop-oriented song of the album and was in fact released as a single prior to the release of the album. Don't let that scare you off because this is an equally great song, and the Mellotron, ARP 2600 and spacy electronic effects are just as present. "Come Alive" is a more bluesy piece, while the other pieces, like "Conception", and "Triangles" simply act as transitional pieces between songs. The music here is way different from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but don't let that scare you away, because this is truly one of the greats of space rock/prog. If you like this kind of music, then you need this album!
