·       A NOTE ON CONTEMPORARY PRESSINGS AND LABELS: CONTEMPORARY LABEL WAS NOTORIOUS FOR USING INCONSISTENT AND ERRATIC LABELING DURING THE 1960s. CERTAIN CONTEMPORARY LABELS (ON THE SAME TITLE!!!) OVERLAPPED WITH OTHER LABELS, SOME WERE IN USE ONLY BRIEFLY, SOME OVERLAPPED WITH CONTEMPORARY'S "STEREO" IMPRINT WHICH ISSUED CERTAIN TITLES ONLY IN STEREO,  SOME LABELS WERE INTRODUCED ONLY TO BE BRIEFLY AND TEMPORARILY PHASED OUT AND THEN RE--INTRODUCED, AND CONTEMPORARY LABEL COLOR, SHADE AND DEEP GROOVE VARIATIONS (NOT TO MENTION: COVER VARIATIONS) ARE EXCEPTIONALLY COMMON. BASED ON EVERYTHING WE SEE ON THIS PRESSING, WE BELIEVE THAT THIS IS AN EARLY (CIRCA 1970) PRESSING OF THIS TITLE.

·       VERY THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the thickness of the vinyl as 8 to 9.

The title of this recording  is ironic and inadvertently truthful. Within a short period, Art Pepper would begin spending many years in jail due to his heroin addiction; this was his next-to-last album of this period. Despite the bleak future, the great altoist (who never seemed to make an uninspired record during his unstable life) is in excellent form in a quintet with trumpeter Jack Sheldon, pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Jimmy Bond, and drummer Frank Butler. Highlights of this fine album include Harold Land's title cut, the 5/4 blues "Las Cuevas De Mario," and Ornette Coleman's "Tears Inside."

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a few "dots" scattered here and there on the surface of the vinyl (these dots are a visible, but almost certainly not audible). These "dots" are usually a result of either (a) exertion of pressure on the record THROUGH the cover, or the record being stored too tightly, or  (b) low-quality paper inner sleeve which lightly irritated parts of the record surface over time.

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
