Description
Up for auction is a Dutch pressing of Art Garfunkel’s 1977 LP Watermark, released –and hastily withdrawn- by CBS, cat no CBS 86032. I’m not completely sure of the chain of events surrounding this album, but this is how I think it goes: Art recorded an LP comprised entirely of peerless Jimmy Webb compositions (a cover of She Moved Through The Fair aside) & arrangements, and issued Crying In My Sleep as the lead 45 from the then-forthcoming LP. When this didn’t receive the success it deserved, he decided to re-think the project, and hastily recorded a cover of (What A) Wonderful World with James Taylor & Paul Simon. This was issued as the hit follow-up to Crying..., and was added to the running order of the LP, unnecessarily removing one of the stand-out cuts on the LP – Fingerpaint- in the process. But not before a few copies had escaped onto the market with the original line-up. Additionally, the cover design was adjusted, not only to accommodate the new title & performance credits, but also –in order to make the title & artist more noticeable in the racks- the lettering/logo was changed from grey to white. US & Canadian copies have always been hideously rare; Dutch copies are barely more common. Here’s a Dutch edition, with the withdrawn track line up & cover, and with the original lyric inner too! Fingerpaint has languished unreleased in the vaults ever since, and has yet to be issued in any form on CD; a sad state of affairs, as it is truly a career peak for both Art & Jimmy: a remarkable song, brilliantly sung. Condition: the vinyl looks fault-free, apart from a single spindle mark on one side. Cover and inner are also perfect. Really, M- all round. My grades: I use a 10-point scale: M-; EX; VG+; VG; VG-; G+; G; G-; F (fair); P (poor). I never use mint as a grade for used records. My feedback from buyers indicates I normally undergrade in listings. Even so, if you have any problems, I'll give you your money back (less shipping costs), no questions asked. Buy with confidence!
