ART BLAKEY “The Freedom Rider” Blue Note 4156, P, RVG, LAM, Mono Vinyl
This is the first edition, 1964, “Van Gelder” stamped, Laminated Cover, “P” pressing of ART BLAKEY “The Freedom Rider” on the "New York USA” labels of Blue Note BLP 4156. Musicians include Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt.
VINYL plays with very low level surface noise (i.e, static, ?? or ????, relative to the volume of the music/instruments) with occasional ticks or pops, but the instruments are very dynamic, clear and strong with clean transients, solid bass frequencies and full tone. Pops and ticks most noticeable at beginning of each side. Some areas dead quiet. No distortion. No skips. Handful of long hairline marks, none feelable. Both sides have excellent gloss. See photos. As with all first pressing Blue Note discs, the powerfully recorded and performed music overcomes imperfections. The “New York USA” labels are clean with spindle marks. See photos.
LAMINATED COVER is in good shape, some peeling. Corners worn. Spine perfect, splits and cracking on seams. Top seam taped end to end. BLUE NOTE RECORDS INC., 43 West 61st St., New York 23” back jacket shows aging, stains, wear. AUTOGRAPH OF COMPOSER GEORGE RUSSELL DATED “JUNE 22ND, 1964.” See photos.
This LP was play-tested on a high-end audio system. Record cleaned on VPI 16.5.
