Description
Up for auction is a very nice copy of the Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers album "Mosaic" released on Blue Note Records (BN 4090) in 1961. Features one of the most legendary Blue Note lineups every assembled: Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Jymie Merritt. Incredible session. Under-rated and under-valued.
This is an authentic and original mono first pressing with the Plastylite "ears" and RVG in the dead wax. Correct and matching New York USA labels. No deep groove, as no first pressings should have them on the New York USA labels at this point, according to Fred Cohen's authoritative book on collecting Blue Notes. Correct 43 W. 61st St., New York 23 address on back cover. Comes with correct and original Blue Note factory inner sleeve.
Cover is in great shape, with very few signs of wear. Lamination retains its original high gloss shine, no bubbles, no tears, though there is a very thin line of rubbing along the album opening (not significant). Corners are sharp with just a tiny bump of the lower right. Seams are strong, intact, no cracks, no creasing, no chipping, no splits at all. Back cover is nice and clean, no ring wear, no writing, no losses. Just the beginning signs of common age yellowing along the edges (see photos), but not significant. Overall, I'd grade the cover Near Mint Minus (NM-).
The vinyl is in very nice shape. Retains much of its original high gloss shine. Side One has a number very fine hairlines that are not feelable, not deep at all, and a few superficial scuffs that can be seen but not heard. Also some faint adhesion marks from storage in the sleeve. Side Two is similar to Side One with a number of hairlines throughout, seen but not felt. Visually, the hairlines are moderately distracting, but overall the vinyl still presents itself as nicely preserved. Visually, I'd grade the vinyl VG+.
I have play tested this record, and the sound reproduction is very strong. It plays surprisingly clean, with very little background noise to distract you. Nice bold, mono high fidelity, with clear, undistorted highs, very little, if any surface noise once the music gets going. Not audiophile clean by any means, but this is a really nice sounding copy, especially when switched in mono.
