A studio project spotlighting the talents of brothers John and Terry Boylan (with support from guitarist Larry Coryell and various L.A. sessions players), The Appletree Theatre survived long enough to release one of the year's more interesting collections.
Co-produced by the brothers (Pete Spargo serving as executive producer), 1968's "Playback" offered up a rather weird concept piece, though admittedly the plotline was largely lost on us. Written by the brothers, the collection offered up a bizarre collage of interlaced vocal narratives, sound effects, song fragments, balanced by an occasional pop piece ("Hightower Square", the bouncy "Brother Speed" and the trippy " You're the Biggest Thing In My Life"). Our personal favorite was the backward tape instrumental "Lotus Flower". There was no doubt the Boylans' were talented. Anyone doubting the statement need merely check out the collision of musical genres compressed into "The Sorry State of Staying Awake" - C&W, blue-eyed soul; they even find time to make mention of LSD and virtually every other pharmaceutical known to man. On the other hand, the set was simply too experimental for the normal listener - no matter how strung out they may have been. Playback is hard to adequately describe: imagine The Association having overdosed on bad acid and you might get a rough feel for the set ... That said, it's a great slice of slightly demented "sunshine pop" which should definitely be checked out with a good set of headphone..
"Playback" track listing:
(side 1)
1.) In the Beginning (instrumental) (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 0:55
2.) Hightower Square (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 2:24
3.) Lullaby (instrumental) (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 0:25
4.) Saturday Morning (John Boylan - Terry Boylan)- 1:53

7.) Chez Louise (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 1:02
8.) E-Train (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 1:00
9.) Meanwhile (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 0:15
10.) Brother Speed (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 3:15
(side 2)
1.) You're the Biggest Thing In My Life (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 3:35

6.) What a Way To Go (John Boylan - Terry Boylan) - 2:50
In the wake of the set's commercial failure Terry went solo, releasing a series of three late-1960s/early-1970s albums, while John reappeared as a member of the short-lived Hamilton Streetcar before turning his attention to production (The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, etc.) and the business side of the house.
***
For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.
(c) In addition, Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(d) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners.
