The French were not immune to the influx of progressive rock that erupted out of the psychedelic scene during the late sixties. By 1975, virtually every country in mainland Europe had fallen under the demonic spell of UK prog rockers ELP, King Crimson and Yes, causing a distinct ripple effect, fanning the flames of much homegrown talent. Germany, natch, was quick to establish its own scene, dubbed kraut rock, whilst Italy and Spain conjured up a brand of prog affectionately labelled symphonic rock. PFM and Nova led the field but France was hot to trot, fielding such heavyweight contenders as Atoll, Heldon, Magma, Pulsar and Ange, with the latter, in particular, carving-out a reputation for delivering long songs, big concepts and complex instrumental jams.

Consequently, the Ange approach secured many fans of this needlessly extravagant musical style, positioning them at the forefront of French progressive rock. Their sound co-opted from the very proficient fingers of Barclay James Harvest, Aphrodite’s Child and, most obviously, Genesis. With two keyboards laying down a foundation of faux symphonic rock, the effect is remarkably sanguine, bolstered by lengthy compositions.

Melodically the pace is set by just four tracks, one each side, lasting twenty-minutes apiece. Judging by the audience reaction it would be fair to say that each one is a conceptual work benefiting from gentle and seductive introductions before exploding into a raging cauldron of progressive rock fury. The obligatory Mellotrons operate beneath a heavy cloud covering of thundering bass, staccato guitar and a vocalist whopasses for a Peter Gabriel doppelganger.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Beautiful and virtually unplayed condition. No spindle marks and virtually no signs of use. Grades as almost shop fresh MINT!

Cover: Again, no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully designed fully laminated gatefold cover - displays full shiny gloss. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is stiff, square and totally uncrushed. Impossible to find like this after 38 years. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
