Extremely hard to find collaboration release on vinyl from Andrew Chalk & Jonathan Coloclough. A limited edition of 286 copies, sold out ages ago and became a big collector's piece!! Co-released by japanese label Siren Records(Michael Prime, Organum, New Blockaders, Mixed Band Philanthropist, etc.) and US label Robot Records(Christoph Heemann, Andreas Martin, Edward Ka-Spel, Merzbow, John Duncan, Small Cruel Party, The Haters, Limpe Fuchs, In Camera, etc.).
Andrew Chalk has been active since 1985 as Ferial Confine and has worked with many associates over the years, such as David Jackman (in Organum), Vortex Campaign, New Blockaders, The, Darren Tate (in Ora), Giancarlo Toniutti, Jonathan Coleclough, and Christoph Heemann (in Mirror). He has now released a number of releases under his own name which have won widespread acclaim, on labels such as Robot Records, Christoph Heemann's Streamline label and his own Faraway Press label. The Mirror project released a steady string of stunnng, highly sought-after records in limited quantites and Chalk's releases on Faraway Press have followed this aesthetic.
Jonathan Coleclough (b. 1963) is an English sound artist active since 1989. His material comes both from the immediate acoustic environment around him, and from using some of the most basic and elemental of sound-making techniques (the scrape of metal, the sigh of human breath). Many of the sounds that he records are freighted with emotional resonance, or come from specific locations with personal significance. The intense but private associations of these sounds aren't intended as the subject of the work, but form an important part of his working practice- they inform his subsequent careful processing and manipulation of the material into sound works that are full of tension, often beautiful and unsettling. The rawness of his gathered sound material contrasts with the sophisticated sound-sculpting tools he uses, and he draws on that contrast to find the necessary tensions in his work. These include the tensions between consonance and dissonance, activity and stasis, the raw and the processed, noticeable and imperceptible change. The sounds of our own urban and rural environments intersect and merge with sounds generated within the closed worlds of electronic and computer equipment. He has had work published in Europe, USA and Japan as well as in his native England, collaborated with Andrew Chalk, Colin Potter, Geoff Sawers and Tim Hill, and has performed in England, Australia and the USA.
Here's a review of the record from All music guide: "Drones can be touch and go. On the one hand, they need to be complex enough to cause the (alert) listener to retain attention and fascination. On the other, if there's too much complexity or activity, their status as "drones" becomes suspect. Jonathan Coleclough and Andrew Chalk are both drone-meisters of long standing and, in Sumac, a single-piece opus, they have constructed a deep, persistent drone that rewards close listening and encourages total absorption. Sound sources appear to include bowed cymbals (or other metals) and there's a strong sense of air passing slowly through brass, although electronic modification makes any such ascription problematic at best. Nothing much changes, no truly momentous events occur. Yet when, several minutes before its conclusion, there is a subtle intensification of sound, it has the effect of a revelation. For fans of true "dronecore," Sumac, with its dark, undulating waves, mysterious breathiness, and multiple layers, might be hard to beat. Recommended. ~ Brian Olewnick, All Music Guide.
