By 1996, Alice In Chains had not played live for over two years. With frontman Layne Staley in a fragile emotional and physical state, and the band on the point of faltering, they needed something to try and get them moving again. The excitement surrounding the grunge explosion was beginning to fade by this point, but the band's emotionally charged MTV Unplugged was something of a reminder of how powerful the Seattle-led genre could be. Similar in tone to Nirvana's legendary performance, the stripping away of distorted guitars and raw power would showcase the fragility and more nuanced potency that existed beneath the bluster. The entire set is a masterclass in emotional intensity, with the likes of 'Would?' and 'Down In A Hole' somehow managing to hit harder in these stripped-back performances than in their original forms. The performance of the brooding and unsettling 'Frogs', the only time it was ever performed live, highlights the sense of darkness and loneliness that was hanging over the band and Staley at the time. Whilst this is an emotionally charged set, the band are in fine form. The vocal interplay between Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell is perfectly judged, essentially pitching darkness and light against each other. There's also some playfulness on show, with Staley saying at the end of the final track, 'The Killer Is Me', "I just wanna hug you all...but I'm not going to".
