ALAN WATTS
This Is It
1962 USA - MEA - LP 1007
Incredibly rare and fascinating recording by Alan Watts issued in 1962 by the private label MEA. If you're looking at this auction probably you already know everything about this men and his teachings, anyway Watts was, alongside with Huxley and Ginsberg, one of the most oustanding figures of the '60 counterculture. Here are some notes about him from Wikipedia.
Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British-born philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master's degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He also explored human consciousness, in the essay "The New Alchemy" (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).
Well about the record, it really HARD to describe, it is a mixture of meditative moods, religious mantras, dissonant tunes, noises, spoken words and mad cries and screams. The record is incredibly rare and everything you want to know about its origin and content is here:

Anyway here are a couple of excerpts:
Contrary to what one might read, psychedelia didn't begin in 1966, and it wasn't invented by the Beatles or Timothy Leary. Psychedelic research and psychedelic culture had already existed for decades, unknown to most except an esoteric jet-set of researchers, artists and philosophers travelling along the London - Boston/N Y - California axis. The atmosphere could be described as academic-bohemian, incarnated in a few super-educated anglosaxons such as Gerald Heard and Aldous Huxley. These men had the intellectual resources to incorporate the mescaline and LSD experience into their already vast knowledge of Western and Eastern thought, and rather than jolting them out of their tracks it gave them concrete evidence and renewed energy.
Much less known is the LP Alan Watts recorded and released the same year. Titled "This Is IT" the album is in fact missing from all Watts bibliographies I've seen, and it ranks as one of his rarest works. The record's importance and uniqueness is only now beginning to see recognition, and its earliest advocates were esoteric record collectors rather than Watts admirers or psychedelic archivists. Its rarity is somewhat puzzling as Watts had recorded and released two albums in the same series and on the same label (MEA) in 1958-59, and these aren't half as obscure.
Beacause of its insane content this album is sometimes regareded as "The first psichedelic record of the history." This record was listed under "rock" because I think it was the best thing to do if you are interested for any reason, but it could fit into several other categories including "religious music."
I have many more items for sale, just let me know if you are interested! I lead an online shop in Italy and I'm a professional records dealer.
CONDITIONS: ex/ex from strict Record Collector grading (cover graded first) Both cover and record are absolutely fantastic and, I think, the very best you can find for such a record. The cover it intact, firm, strong, with no seam splits (rare for an american 1962 LP!) it has the lightest wear on bottom seam and presents the very light dust microspots you can appreciate on the cover, since the paper is slightly embossed. You can remove this if you want with the proper rubber (in Italy we call it "bread rubber" but I don't think this mean anything at all in english ! :-D) but I think this very light dust is a part of the history of this record. Also a light trace of ring wear under the word "Watts" on the front. The vinyl is great, all the very light hairlines you can see under a strong light were made by takeing it in and out of the inner sleeve, no scratches, no bad marks, just the inevitable ag wear but clean and bright! Plays with minimal background noise in quite parts, inevitable, I think yhis light crackling you can hear during spoken parts is a part of the history of the record too!
