Description

Alan Gordon.  Unlike most of my listings this week, his is certainly no psych—or even psych-related—album but it is on the highly collectable tax-scam label Tiger Lily, which put out its share of psych, hard rock and related records (Stonewall, Crack, Velvert Turner Group, Too Smooth), all very rare now.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot: the fact that about a month ago a copy of this album sold here for over $1500 may have something to do with my deciding to sell this now...J  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

So what does The ExtraGordonary Band sound like?  It’s something of a mixed bag, but it is mainly divided between funky R&B/Motown-style soul and pop tunes.  No doubt about it—Gordon is a consummate songwriter; he penned “My Heart Belongs to Me,” which appears here, and also co-wrote the Turtles’ hit “Happy Together.”  What’s remarkable is that every single track on this album—whether it be the funky “Step Up to the Mike” or the Beach Boys-like “I Ain’t Gonna Cry Tonight”—is infectious, memorable, and sounds like a potential hit.  This begs the question: why didn’t this album get released commercially, instead of being relegated to a micro pressing of 50 copies or whatever.  I think that accounts for this record’s appeal: the music is so consistently strong that the few who know about it are convinced it should have been made widely available, but instead must vie for one of the very few available copies.  Another thing that adds to the record’s desirability is the fact that, thankfully, the songs don’t sound like demos, but rather are well-arranged and recorded.  (Again, how did this fail to get released on a major label?)  Don’t miss out; there aren’t too many opportunities to get this one!  Released in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />U.S. on Tiger Lily in 1976.  The cover is in G++ and the record is in G+ (note that there are ten loud clicks on a track on side two).

Winner pays postage (in the U.S., this would be about $4.50 for one LP sent by Media Mail).  Package insured upon request.  Winners outside of the U.S. will be notified of postal fees, but an approximate cost for one LP to many countries is $15.50 by airmail.  If you bid on and win more than one item, you WILL save on postage!  Note: I do not gouge on postage and packaging costs.  Record will be carefully packaged in a strong, oversized LP mailer.  In addition to money orders and checks, I also accept PayPal.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  E-mail: david.o@jjldj.com.  This week I am mainly listing psychedelic or acid rock and psych-related albums (many of them the kind of thing that gets listed in Acid Archives if it happens to be by an American artist or band).  To see more rare and collectable items, click on the “view seller’s other auctions” button above.  Other key words: garage, basement, underground sounds, hippie, acid folk, private press, custom press, fuzz, hard rock, hardrock, prog, psychedelia, sike, Pokora, hippie.
