The International Library of African Music (ILAM) was founded by Hugh Tracey (1903-1977) in 1954 at the apex of 25 years of field recording and research into African music. In the 1960s, ILAM released his exhaustive series - the 210 LP "Sound of Africa" series for educational purposes with support from the Ford Foundation. A few university libraries acquired this massive collection but they remained inaccessible to the greater public. A decade later, a highly edited and more populist series, the "Music of Africa", was released by Decca/London , and later Gallo re-released this series (minus Tracey's recorded introductions) on 19 LPs.

These copies for auction were purchased many years ago directly from ILAM in Africa from what was left of their unplayed stock. They are very rare indeed and essential to the larger study of african music.
