ABBOTT & COSTELLO
"WHO'S ON FIRST”
Label: None ~ AC-1
Released: 1956
Condition: V-
It was 1938 on the Kate Smith radio show that the first nationwide performance of Abbott & Costello's “Who's On First?” took place. The comedy sketch, which featured Abbott trying to explain to Costello the absurd names of his baseball players, was an instant success. Now, over 80 years later, the routine is still as fresh and funny as it was in 1938.
On May 29, 1956, it was announced that a filmed performance and gold record of Abbott & Costello's “Who's On First” skit would be placed on permanent display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown N.Y. To this day, the 'Who's On First' display is one of the most visited areas at the Museum.
The record offered here may have been autographed at an induction ceremony by the two comedians, but that is speculation. Lou Costello died in 1959, so there was only a short window for other examples of this 1956 record to be signed. There have only been a few (3?) signed copies of this record auctioned off in the last 15 years.
This record has fairly heavy groove wear with graying on both sides and a few scratches. However, it plays well without a lot of surface noise and the performance comes through loud and clear. There is no sticking or skipping during playback.
There is no record company named on the label. The trail-off wax is etched “AC-1” and “AC-2”. The signatures appear to be in ball point pen. The Side 2 label was signed upside down so the picture has been inverted to see the signatures clearly.
