The tracks represent a terrific selection of energized boogie rockers not unlike early ZZ Top meets the early Allman Brothers ... Ram Jam's self-titled debut contains mega-doses of ass-kicking blues rockin' boogie jammers with furious spells ... It is just about impossible to be of a certain age and not to have spent a great deal of time listening to 'Black Betty' in darkened rock clubs at full volume. This is a pretty decent album and is way more than just the one pulverizing track. Saying that, familiarity aside 'Black Betty' is still the best track on the album although 'Right On The Money' is not too far behind. 'Keep Your Hands On The Wheel' has a Rolling Stones feel about it and with the other rockers included it's an overall solid album. Elsewhere highlights include, the barnstormin' boys lay on the boogie stomp 'n' roll with "Let It All Out", the cowbell clunkin' "Right on the Money", the James Gang inspired "404", the Foghat influenced rockin' "All for the Love of Rock 'n' Roll", the Allman Brothers' stylin' "High Steppin'", and the cool cruise of "Overloaded". Even the T-Rex "Electric Warrior" styled 'Too Bad On Your Birthday' is an enjoyable way to spend three minutes.

From seemingly out-of-nowhere, New York's Ram Jam debuted in the mid '70s with their self-titled ten song LP, and quickly rode the unexpected nation-wide success of the "Black Betty" single. We're not quite sure why these guys never got the recognition or success they deserved but if you like 'Black Betty', and we're pretty sure you must have heard it, it's a fairly safe bet you'll like the album too.
