Description
As many of you will be aware, the people that run eBay have decided to introduce a free posting policy for many items - including records. They have cited over-priced postal charges as the reason for this move, but they really want an excuse to grab yet more money from the unfortunate seller. If they expect the sellers to offer a free postage service, wouldn't it be fairer for eBay to set an example, and offer a free listing service?
I'm dipping into my rarer 45s again for this one, chosen at random from my shelves. I would have reached it eventually in my alphabetical trawl - it's just appearing early.

Courtesy of a 1975 issue of Blues & Soul (#163), I've been able to scan the above publicity photo of this particular 'Soul Sam'. I was quite surprised to find he'd that done one at all, since Sam had only released this one record at the time. The article itself was able to shed more light on the singer's uneventful career, but insisted on spelling his surname as 'Nesbitt' (the same as 'Rab C.'). Kev Roberts (who should have known better) made the same error in his Northern Soul Top 500 - no, "Black Mother Goose" never even made the 'Bubbling Under' section, but it did get a small mention with regards to Patrice Holloway's fine cover version, on Capitol (which is a hell of a lot easier to find). Many very common titles crop up on eBay with that tired old phrase "you don't see this one very often", but in this case it's actually true.
Amos Records was based in Los Angeles, and was in operation during 1969-1970. It released over fifty singles, but almost all are of no interest to soul collectors whatsoever, and well-known pop singers like Bing Crosby, Johnny Tillotson, Frankie Avalon, and Frankie Laine, crop up with alarming regularity on the label. Only 45s by Steve Colt & Paradox, The Standards, Little Helen (initially released on Soultown), and Ebony Jam, are worth forking out the readies for, and only the Sam Nesbit offering is given a serious price tag.
In the Blues & Soul article mentioned above, Sam explained why he thought that the record flopped: "Jack Walker, a top D.J. at station WLIB in New York, was scheduled to make it his 'Pick' on the week it was released. I had taken the record down personally on the Tuesday, and on the Saturday night Jack was stabbed to death. Which meant the record got practically no airplay at all". Bad news for Sam, but even worse for Jack!
This single was considered for a contemporary UK release by Dave Godin, on a venture titled 444, but it was shelved when his Soul City label went bust. I seem to recall seeing a press sheet on the subject in an old fanzine, but can't remember which one it was in. When Godin started his Right On label, half a decade later, he did release the same singer's "Keep On Hustling Baby", which is the only other record I know of by Mr. Nesbit.
Both titles have a youtube sound link, so there's no description needed. I will give a special mention of the unusual label design, which features a dove in flight on one side, and one at rest on the other.
This one is currently priced by Manship at £400 for a minter.
The styrene on both sides has a rather large number of scuffs, scrapes, and "spiders webs". These are only light and superficial, however, and the play condition is at least excellent on the A-side, with a faint touch of needle burn on the B-side. There are no ticks, clicks, sticks, or jumps.
The A-side label once had a small sticker, which refused to be removed without a fight. It has left a tear/stain (see scan, 4 o'clock). There is also a smaller/lighter mark, which may have been the site of another sticker (see scan, 2 o'clock). The B-side label has three small bubbles, with minor wear to the text lying above. There is additional friction wear at the edges of both labels.
There is also a deletion hole.
The edges are completely chip-free.
