6 Hard Rock/AOR/Power Pop/Psych Private Pressings
A collection of six US private pressings consisting of a mix of hard rock, AOR, prog, psych and country rock. Haven't played many of these for over 20 years but here's what I can tell you...
Skyless 'Off The Floor' Private, Canada, 1987
STRANGE ONE - essentially its a hard rock three piece with tough-guy riffs and typical private press packaging ie home painted cover and band collage on the back. Musically there is a pronounced reggae flavou underpinning the songs - like a heavy metal Police actually. Recored at the famous Metal Works Studio in Toronto.
Scratch 'Party At The Big House' Private, USA, 198?
NEVER SEEN this one anywhere except one time on eBay. Described as killer private hard rock and given an early 80s release date. Of course it isn't killer and it, in my opinion its not even early 80s, more like 1985ish. Sure it is hard rock but its so inept that you can't help but think why did this unit even bother to go into a recording studio. The dude pictured on the back cover looks like a total twit. Six tracks if you can get through all of 'em. Still in shrink. Grades as MINT/MINT!
Eden's Rebels 'S/T' Private, USA, 1985
SOLD TO me as a killer unknown hard rock private pressing but in reality turns out to be an inept mid 80's rock band with heavy guitar and hard rock riffs. Won't win any awards but certainly interesting in a sort of obscure kind of way. Grades as MINT/MINT!
Bees Knee's 'Pure Honey', Derrick, USA 1979
IF YOU dig the west coast sounds of AOR acts like Toto, Steely Dan and Air Supply then you'll love these guys. Nice melodic AOR pop with a cool injection of Hall And Oates style soulfulness. Has a real cool private press full clour cover and lyric innser sleeve. Still in shrink wrap. Grades as MINT/MINT!
Topper 'Earth Tones', Iomo, USA 1986
SOLD TO me by an unscrupulous eBay seller as a killer prog album... of course it isn't. This does have some prog tendency's but I would say its more jazz fusion with a prog twist. Some interesting synth and guitar soloing by the way so not all bad news. Has a real cool proggy private press cover and feel. Grades as Ex/MINT-!
Snake Eyes 'One Night Stand', Snake Eyes, USA, 1981
SOLD TO me by another unscrupulous dealer in Greece as a sh*t kickin' southern rock record... well guess what? It's a dud all round. If this is classed as hard rock then I'm the pope. The honest truth is that its country rock of benign quality with only one track you could class as hard rock... and that's if you were being very generous. Grades as M/M Still in shrink wrap!
