MORE INFO ON THE ARTIST & RELEASE- 45 Grave are an American deathrock and punk rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1979. The original group broke up in 1985, but vocalist Dinah Cancer subsequently revived the band.

History[edit]

The band was founded by Paul B. Cutler in Los Angeles, California during the punk rock movement, formed alongside another band with almost the same lineup called Vox Pop, which produced two singles.[1] Its original lineup consisted of Cancer (formerly of Castration Squad) on vocals, Cutler (formerly of the Consumers) on guitar, Rob Graves (also known as Rob Ritter, formerly of the Exterminators, the Bags and the Gun Club) on bass, and Don Bolles (of the Exterminators, the Germs and Nervous Gender) on drums.[2] The name, according to Bolles, derived from a mysterious button Cutler found at a thrift store and gave to Bolles for Christmas that said "WE DIG 45 GRAVE". Bolles stated that this needed to be the name of the band, and everyone agreed.

In 1980, 45 Grave recorded their first released song, "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood", included on the Los Angeles Free Music Society compilation album, Darker Skratcher. The song was a cover version of the novelty song originally performed by Don Hinson and The Rigamorticians on their 1964 album release Monster Dance Party. The 45 Grave recording (as with the original, produced by Gary S. Paxton of Skip & Flip) achieved cult status and became a signature song of the band's live sets.

Early on, the band began by playing the Consumers songs that Cutler had written, with lyrics changed to fit Cancer's singing style, before concentrating on composing new material like "Black Cross" (issued as a single in 1981, featuring Pat Smear of the Germs on guitar on the B-side "Wax") and a fast-paced punk song called "Partytime" (which was later slowed down and reworked on their 1983 debut album and sole studio release, Sleep in Safety. Another signature 45 Grave track, "Evil", was featured on MTV, and band members appeared as extras in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.

Despite never achieving major success, 45 Grave were recognized as being one of the first American gothic bands, predating the formation of Christian Death. The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles listed 45 Grave and Christian Death as "early proponents of American Gothic Rock"

Autopsy is a compilation album by 45 Grave, released in 1987 by Enigma Records. Recorded in the band's early days, it contains previously unreleased songs (many originally written and recorded by guitarist Paul B. Cutler's first band, the Consumers)) and alternate versions of tracks that were later rerecorded on the band's 1984 debut album, Sleep in Safety. Also included was the previously released 1981 single "Black Cross" and its B-side "Wax."

CUSTOMER REVIEWS Oliver Sheppard 5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing, essential June 10, 2005 Format: Audio CD This vastly underrated corpus of 45 Grave's roughest, harshest, thrashiest music was released on cassette and vinyl in the late 80s by Restless. It's now out of print, and unavailable, generally, which is a complete shame, because this album is among the best early 80's hardcore punk that exists.

Folks familiar with 45 Grave as some sort of post-punk, experimental death rock project would be surprised to listen to this, and discover that earky on 45 Grave were in fact quite the fastcore, hardcore punk band. Emphasis here is on speed and aggression. The opening track, "The Plan," is one of the fastest numbers from the early 80s I can recall. There is no post-punk experimentation here: it is raw, primtive, galvanizing rock and roll, with a morbid motif. In that light, the album this most bears comprison is mayhaps TSOL's "Dance with Me."

A lot of the tracks here are actually CONSUMERS songs re-worked, and sped up, with Dinah cancer on vocals. A few of the tracks have male vox; these tend to be the most melodic of the tracks here, but still they pack punch in a '77 WEIRDOS sort of way. The lineup on this album has links to THE GERMS, the DEAD KENNEDYS, and other L.A. hardcore bands of the early 80s.

Don't be fooled. This is not some slow goth album. This is fast, guitar-based, hardcore punk rock. It's my personal favorite of anything 45 Grave produced. Gerry Hathaway 4.0 out of 5 starsTheir fastest and punkiest!

Format: Audio CD I got a copy of this brand new on e bay for 30 bucks and I couldn't believe it! This material is much older than the Sleep In Safety album. Pat Smear from The Germs and later Foo Fighters plays guitar on several tracks. The production is raw, as well as the vocals. But its infectious and the more you listen, the more you will listen! Autopsy almost has a hardcore feel to it. There are keys of course on Surf Bat and Riboflavin. Fast punk riffage in early misfits-like production quality. Great album but this is crying out for a remastered re-release. Probably never so you might as well stick with this. Get Sleep In Safety too.
