 All items are visually graded but not alwaysplayed. If an item is sealed then the vinyl/disc is presumed to be in mint condition and any faults will be a manufacture issue and not the fault of the seller. Many will have scuffs due to storage.

I always include photos of the actual item for sale. They are original issues unless stated, and are from my personal collection. These have been in storage since 2010 and not played for that period only played recently for grading purposes.

Please note that most used vinyl records have a little surface noise or crackle regardless of age/condition.

RecordCollector Magazine's/ Goldmine Standard Grading Guide: 

MINT (M): The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or unplayed should be Mint.

Near Mint (NM or M-) : A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either and of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. An LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest price listed in all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the opinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest Goldmine book value.

EXCELLENT (EX+/EX/ EX-): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. Light marks where the vinyl has been in and out of the inner sleeve, or tiny signs of use generally.

The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Generally worth 50% of the Near Mint value. A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear, A little rub, light inaudible marks, a little background crackle and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences.

Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.

Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear due to age use handling and storage. Sleeve may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print.

VG+ covers should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable mild surface marks and the occasional mild light scratch, It’s seen a bit of life, but is still usable. Light pops and clicks, an edge split, light visible scratches. You can still listen to it and enjoy looking at it, but it is visually and audibly used.

VG covers will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or it or stamped a price tag on it, too. Normal wear and tear on the cover due to age storage use and handling, without any major defects.

Good Plus(G+): Generally worth10-15% of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad ! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white).

A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. A Good to G+ cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing, such as, for example, huge radio station letters written across the front to deter theft.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and “ticks” will almost certainly accompany the playback.

The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.

Generic Sleeve: A type of sleeve that is not specific to the record. A generic sleeve is either a plain sleeve or a company sleeve with standard company artwork. A sleeve that is graded as “generic” needs no further grading, as a generic sleeve generally adds little value to the item and can be easily replaced.
