TWO NEAR MINT BLUEBIRD 78's FEATURING SLEEPY JOHN ESTES
“Sleepy” John Estes was a Tennessee-based singer and guitarist who’s crying vocals and handcrafted songs were well-entrenched in the country blues tradition. Estes wrote down-home blues songs that revealed much about his personal experiences, as well as songs that commented on social conditions, especially those of the 1930s. His vocal style recalled elements of the traditional field holler, while his guitar work, though limited, possessed a simplistic purity that became popular with folk-blues fans in the 1960s. Estes was born into a sharecropping family just outside Ripley, Tennessee, but was raised in Brownsville. He lost sight in his right eye after an accident that occurred during his youth. Estes learned to play guitar and began performing at area parties and picnics, often with mandolin player Yank Rachel. In the l920s Estes, Rachell, and harmonica/jug player Hammie Nixon went to Memphis and performed in a jug band on street corners and in parks. Estes began his recording career in 1929 with Victor. Two years later, he and Nixon relocated to Chicago, where, during the 1930s, Estes recorded for Decca. Estes also recorded for Bluebird from 1940 to 1941. "Someday, Baby" (also known as "Worried Life Blues"), his most noted Bluebird release, eventually became one of Estes' trademark numbers and a blues standard. Estes, who got his nickname because of his propensity to take naps, returned to Tennessee and ended the first phase of his recording career.
