We choose songs from any area of music that we feel are good songs, and lend themselves to our style and approach to playing. Our choice of instruments and harmony is determined by what we feel each song needs (or doesn’t need). We try to let the instruments and arrangement support the words and melody, which should be the strongest elements of the song. We come from several different musical backgrounds — classical, jazz, folk, country, and bluegrass, and four states. We want to help preserve the spirit and feeling of traditional bluegrass, and also to draw from our own backgrounds, and our influences on each other in the two years we’ve been together, to present some new songs, and some new ideas. Writing about your own album is a little like trying to describe a close friend. It’s hard to reduce all those complicated feelings to words. For us the album was days the sun went unseen, nights the lights never went out, and notes that seemed right one day and wrong the next. Sisters with ice cream, folks in Knoxville who left the light on. Countless friends, who kept us looking forward. As with someone you know well, you know there are wrinkles and imperfections. Some you see and some you don't. But when you get a few feet away, or miles, or months, the main thing you have is a feeling. It’s a good one, and we’d like to share it with you I can honestly say that this is the best bluegrass album I’ve been a part of. Louisa and Sam did a super job of choosing and arranging the songs, and producing the album. Boot Hill’s creativity shows that they are not just an average bunch of musicians.
