1971 AMERICAN TOP 40 PROGRAM NO. 714-7 Chart Date 11/13/71 Very Early Vinyl Pressing Run
The condition is used, as this three album set has only been under a record needle once when, I test played them at the Watermark studios in Hollywood in 1971. This box set was pressed by the Custom Fidelity Record Co. on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, CA. It has been in vertical flat storage where ever I lived since that time. In the early 1970's I was working in the recording industry building recording studios and maintaining audio equipment in the Hollywood area in California. I have never thought of myself as being "Vintage" but I just realized that it has been over Fifty Years since I first received this item which I have offered here.
A little background story may be important so, here it is... I was hired to install and maintain a Tape Duplication System for Watermark, Inc., who as you may know, owned and produced the American Top40 syndicated radio show hosted by Casey Kasem. This System, Manufactured by Ampex, was to be used to duplicate, at High Speed, the Two 10-1/2" 1/4" tape reels each week so they could be sent to the hundreds of radio stations across the United States. The short technical process was, Two 10-1/2" Masters Tapes which were just finished in the ATF (American Top Forty) Studio, needed to be copied at 120 Inches Per Second to make Copies that would be played by each Radio Station at 15 Inches Per Second. These copies needed to be boxed and sent by over- night carriers to the Radio Stations. When I first setup the Tape Duplication System I believe there were 120 Radio Stations. Now the show was a One hour ( 60 minute ) show so it took Two 10-1/2" reels to air the show and even though we were copying at Eight Times the original speed it took at least 7-1/2 Minutes to even make a single copy. So we added additional copy recorders so we could make Six copies in each copy run. Then it would take only Seven to Eight hours to make the 120 Station Copies.
Why is this copy time so important ? As the number of stations continued to grow when it reached 220 Stations it became clear that getting the show's master tape production finished and making tape copies became harder and harder to get it done and shipped to all the stations by their Air Time. When I came to Watermark to work I had just finished helping the Custom Fidelity Company, in Hollywood, California build it's own Record Pressing Plant. I had started with them years before that doing location recording and then having them do limited pressing of records for my customers. I worked out a deal with David Berkus, who owned Custom Fidelity Records and we started to do Test Pressings of records to be sent to the Radio Station in mid 1971. It is not clear to me, at 76 years old, what was the first actual shipment to the Radio Stations which was all Vinyl Records. I have only had this one record set all these years which is very likely to be one of the first production pressings.
