1970 ORIGINAL HARD BLUES COLLECTIBLE WITH WILD FEMALE VOCALS

                                                  Fear Itself

\                                                   USA  - DOT RECORDS -DLP 25942

FEAR ITSELF, a 1970 [original first pressing] collectible, was led by a rousing female, ELLEN McILWAINE, who went on as a prominant guitarist & folkrock singer ...before it all happened, Ellen checked out New York's Cafe a Go Go, where she shared the bill with another young guitar sensation named Jimi Hendrix. After some time there Hendrix went to Britain to form the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Ellen returned to her hometown of Atlanta Georgia to form the group Fear Itself with Chris Zaloom (lead gtr), Paul Album (bass), and Bill McCord (drums). Fear Itself reflected the "underground" and "psychedelic" blues of the time, kind of a Janis Joplin/Jefferson Airplane meld. They made this one album for Dot records, featuring more rock-oriented versions of tunes she'd later be identified with: Crawling Kingsnake, Underground River, Born Under a Bad Sign and Billy Gene (later Billy Jean), as well as an 8:44 version (the mandatory Sixties "long version") of "In My Time of Dyin'".

At heart a hard garage blues band, with "psychadelic rock" edges. Sharp and well rehersed, Ellen McIlwaine has truly got something special going, ala Janis Joplin, but different. Her style is often something devestating. Listen to her wail like a fifth instrument in In My Time of Dying. One might find the selection of blues songs a little harsh, but this is decidedly strong stuff. Highlights are Underground River (alright now, she screams) In My Time Of Dying, Lazarus and Billy Gene.
