1968 COLUMBIA 360 SOUND ORIGINAL ~ ACID ROCK LEGEND
Psychedelic Psoul
The FREAK SCENE
\ USA - Columbia 360 Sound - CS 9456
RARE and sought 1968 original first pressing on the highly sought 360 Sound Columbia label of the sixties...icluded is the original printed Columbia inner sleeve...
The Freak Scene was put together by Rusty Evans and they were essentially a garage rock band who were signed to Columbia records for the expressed purpose of creating an album that would reflect the sounds of the counter culture. The album had some good pop songs ('A
Million Grains of Sand', 'Butterfly Dream') and the album also featured very heavy-handed psych 'poetry' as lyrics. Some songs read like slogans ('Draft Beer, Not Students') and some other tracks featured tape loops and edits to simulate current albums by the
Mothers, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Doors to some extent, Capt. Beefheart, as well as English bands, most notably the Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper' and the Rolling Stones period piece album 'Their Satanic Majesties Request'.
A great little record of hippie acid-rock. The songs have a very trippy nature, mixed with a bit of politics ("draft beer, not students") and the album's produced with lots of cool effects that make the fuzz guitars go wild, the voices sound spooky, and which introduce some sound snippets and a small bit of electronics! The whole thing's definitely a "Freak Scene" overall the kind of tripped out album that somehow sounds even better today than it did many years back. Titles include "The Subway Ride Thru Inner Space", "My Rainbow Life", "The Center Of My Soul", "Mind Bender", "Grok", "Watered Down Soul", "A Million Grains Of Sand"....
The album is virtually a second Deep LP and almost identical in style...go wild with one of the best acid rock albums of the sixties on a major label...
