In 1968, psychedelia finally achieved acceptance in the corporate offices of EMI. Rather than just letting the artists on their roster come up with psychedelic music as their creative impulses dictated, the label began looking for psychedelia and, in some instances, creating it corporately. These impulses would ultimately be channeled sensibly into the Harvest Records label and, to a lesser degree, Regal Zonophone. But in the meantime, it led to the Lord Sitar album. Lord Sitar is both an anonymous soloist and an equally obscure ensemble whose sole claim to fame — or anything else — is the self-titled album that they (or is it he?) cut for EMI in 1968. Near as one can tell, producer-arranger John Hawkins dreamed up this little exercise in raga-schlock, which used as its jumping off point George Harrison's sitar work on Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and recreated the droning textures of "Within You, Without You." Indeed, the anonymity of Lord Sitar, and the fact that awkins mentioned Harrison prominently in his notes resulted in the suspicion that Lord Sitar was none other than the Beatles guitarist himself. This ruse (the precursor, in its modest way, to the rumors surrounding Klaatu a decade later) might've worked — at least for a few seconds — if only Hawkins hadn't selected truly bizarre songs such as "If I Were A Rich Man," "Daydream Believer," and Kim Fowley's "Ode To Joy" rip-off "Emerald City" — not to mention Hawkins' own "Tomorrow's People" and "In A Dream" — to record.
