ULTRA RARE Holy GRAIL 33 LP of BEACH MUSIC !
C.1965 33 LP Record by Eden, NC Legends "The Tropics"
PRIVATE PRESSED on the "Ohio Recording Service" Label.. Ultra rare label described on Discogs as a "1960s custom recording company from Toledo, Ohio"..
Discogs credits the "Ohio Recording Service" of Toledo label with only 3 recordings in the years 1964 and 1965..
Here is a little background info about this most historic Beach Music band:
Recognized as one of the first bands to break the color barrier in the south, the band's original name was the "Interracial Tropics". The band started in 1961 in the area of Eden, NC and the first members were: Ken Adkins, Arnold Robinson, Leonard Collins & Jimmy Robinson..two white fellows and two black fellows.
Things began to get rolling in 1962 when the band began to be managed by Bill Kennedy, the first manager of the Castaways (of Greensboro, NC) ...
Soon thereafter, they gained a hot reputation and were joining Dee Clark on stage, with the band later backing the Impressions, Martha and the Vandellas, Mary Wells, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Lee Dorsey, Major Lance, the Tams, Showmen and the Drifters.
The Tropics shared the bill with the Temptations on the BDG Quad at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, playing to 12,000 on a Saturday afternoon. An outdoor concert in Chapel Hill in support of Sam and Dave drew an even larger crowd.
Shortly after backing Dee Clark in Durham, the Tropics traveled to Greensboro on March 15, 1965 to record a 45 record at Copeland Studios.
The group had rehearsed an Adkins’ original (“Hey You Little Girl”) in Peters’ basement and performed it live before the sessions..
Before the group began work on the two tracks for the 45 record, they were asked to run through a set so the engineer could set levels. “We did 13 other songs that aren’t nearly as polished,” recalls Peters. All were recorded onto a reel tape, which Adkins kept, along with the master tapes for both sides of their single. All were cover versions of popular recordings, including the Impressions’ “People Get Ready,” Jerry Butler’s “He Will Break Your Heart,” and “Before Six,” an instrumental co-written by Curtis Mayfield and recorded by Larry Frazier that served as the Tropics’ theme song. The songs lack bottom and were performed at breakneck speed, but Adkins points out that they are the only surviving “live” recordings of the band... could this LP be part of this master reel tape?!?
This LP has the following (10) songs:
1) Silky Sax Drenched Instrumental
2) You Are My Only Sunshine
3) Hey, Little Girl (Major Lance)
4) Sticks & Stones (Ray Charles)
5) Monkey Time (Major Lance)
SIDE B
1) Blue Velvet
2) Woman Mean As She Can Be
3) I Got A Woman Way Across Town (Ray Charles)
4) Talk to Me (Little Willie John)
5) Shine Your Light on Me
I believe that lead vocals on this LP are being sung mostly by Ken Adkins, with back ground vocal accompaniment..
The rare LP remains well preserved, by in large.. The worst flaw is on the first 1/2 of song #2 "Woman Mean As She Can Be", as the first 1/2 of this song was played with a bad needle.. Luckily though, only this 1:10 minute portion was played with a bad needle, thankfully!!
If you examined the first (4) images, you can see circular scratches showing this.. This resulted in 8 skips in the first 1/2 of this particular song, only..
Thankfully, there are no other circular scratches on the record and no other song has any skips at all!!
PLAY TESTED for solid VG+ condition!!
The LP plays with crisp clarity and sounds great!! Some back ground crackle in spots is mostly confined to the dead wax..
Both sides play ultra clean, crisp & clear, with some scattered pops, ticks & light crackles in some of the quietest spots ... hence the VG+ ...nice shiny lightly played LP and really great sounding!!
No annoying staticy noise shadowing the vocals & sound portions at all, typical of an LP this age..
The visually well conditioned vinyl shows some scattered hairlines & wear but still has it's original gloss....appears to have been lightly played ...examining the spindle holes, there are signs of the lightest playwear to each side..
The LP is unknown to Discogs, who only list the 1965 TOPIC 45 "Hey You Little Girl" as the only recording ever to have been recorded by the band..
WHERE IN THE WORLD WILL YOU EVER FIND ANOTHER ONE?!?
