Superb 1962 O.Winston Link Sounds of the Steam Locomotive 'General' 7" 45 RPM Vinyl Mono EP gatefold sleeved train record. Featuring the sounds of the 107-year old Steam Locomotive 'GENERAL', the oldest operating steam locomotive in America.
It rolled to fame on the Western & Atlantic Railroad one rainy morning, April 12, 1862, during the Civil War, when James J. Andrews and 19 Yankee Raiders made off with it at Big Shanty, Georgia, and headed north toward Chattanooga, Tennessee. The ensuing 87-mile chase by William A. Fuller, conductor of the train, and his ultimate capture of the engine eight hours later, became one of the best-remembered highlights of that conflict.
Today, the historic locomotive, reconditioned by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, lessee of the W&A, moves under its own steam and provides a most unique link with the past. The sounds as it chuffs along, are the same as those heard on it's normal runs between Atlanta and Chattanooga a century ago. The toot of the throaty whistle and the clang of the solid bronze bell are the same sounds heard by Mr. Andrews and his Raiders as they sped north intent on wrecking the W&A, and cutting the Confederate supply line in many places.
