Description
OK Edison fans we have a rare treat. A 1913 Edison Disc presentation box. Technically speaking they weren't called Diamond Discs yet. It was October 1913 when Edison finally offered to the world the first commercial list of Edison discs and the machines to play them on. During 1912 up through October 1913 few discs were pressed as they were still experimenting with disc manufacture, materials and getting the Disc machines themselves ready. It was during this time that Edison used these presentation boxes to send sample pressings to loyal dealers and jobbers as a demonstration what was to come. No doubt these beautiful boxes would have created the intended impression of high quality. These were often pressed in extremely small quantities. Once commercial pressings were being shipped in October 1913 these boxes were no longer used and the records were placed in sleeves. These presentation boxes are now extremely difficult to find.
This box does NOT come with a record. It is the box only. It is for catalog number 80033. Songs are "Roses, Roses, Everywhere" (H. Trotere) and is simply listed as Soprano and Tenor Orchestra Accompaniment. The second song is "Overture" From Opera "Tancredi" (Rossini). Handwritten underneath the description of the first song is Marie Kaiser and Royal Fish. Marie is the Soprano and Royal is the Tenor which matches my documentation on these early records. It looks like the original owner/dealer knew who the artists were. It was Edison's practice at this time not to use artist credits.
The condition of the front of the box is good except it has been flattened. Being empty the sides were flattened out due to the weight of records on top of it. The top and the bottom of the box touch in the center and you can see from the pictures that sides are flattened out in places. It has a couple corners that were ripped from being flattened. This box has a Copyright date of 1913 in the lower right hand corner. Inside is a notice/patent sticker. Color is green or turquoise, the standard color for the 80000 series.
