Description

Artist: LAURA NYRO

Title: NEW YORK TENDABERRY

Label/Cat no: Sleeve: CS 9737/Disc: KCS 9737

Grading (vinyl first): Ex/Ex-

This is a copy of Laura Nyro's masterpiece of a third album (hugely influential on many artsts - Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, you name them, most U.S. female singer/songwriters' post 1969 were affected by this devastatingly personal album) - complete with lyric booklet - but with one crucial difference.

This one has completely different sleeve artwork.

The more usual front cover artwork is an iconic  B&W shot of Laura on her balcony, with her hair being blown by the wind. This cover is a version of the 'balcony shot' from the front of the lyric brochure but with a few subtle differences:

  1. This shot shows Laura sitting on the balcony with her dog - there are no figures AT ALL in the booklet shot.
  2. The booklet shot was taken in the evening - the city lights are on. This shot was taken in the late afternoon - there are NO city lights, and the daylight is clearly visible.
  3. The large glass vase visible in the cover shot is NOT in the booklet shot.
  4. There is NO puddle of water in the cover shot, but it is in the booklet shot.

The catalogue number given to the album (sleeve, disc and booklet) in 1969 was KCS 9737.

The catalogue number on the front cover and spine of this copy is CS 9737.

This is an older numbering system to the KCS series, which was introduced late in 1968. This probably means that the album was originally meant to come out in 1968, but delayed for some reason until the following year, which makes this most probably the ORIGINAL cover artwork - for some reason the decision was made to withdraw it. The most likely explanation of this album's existence is that more sleeves were needed at some point, and that the rejected front slick was mistakenly used, as the rear of the sleeve carries the usual KCS number.

Whatever the answer, this is rare as hen's teeth, and is not likely to come up for sale again any time soon - we have put a reasonable reserve on it, as befitting it's rarity, but what price do you put on a piece of history?
