SO SHROUDED IN MYTH AND MYSTERY IS THIS RELEASE THAN NOT EVEN THE EXACT RELEASE DATE CAN BE DETERMINED WITH ANY DEGREE OF CERTAINTY; THE GIVEN RELEASE DATES VARY FROM 1970 TO 1975; FROM WHAT WE COULD DETERMINE, THE ALBUM WAS ACTUALLY RECORDED IN 1970 AND THEN, AFTER THE GROUP COULD NOT FIND ANY MAJOR DOMESTIC LABEL THAT WOULD DISTRIBUTE IT DUE TO THE ALBUM'S POLITICALLY RADICAL CONTENT AND CONTROVERSIAL IMAGE OF TWO SHINTO SAINTS IN THEIR BIRTHDAY SUITS, DECIDED TO DISTRIBUTE THE ALBUM THEMSELVES VIA MAIL ORDER ONLY;  IT APPEARS THAT ONLY ABOUT 600 COPIES WERE PRODUCED AND MAILED STARTING IN 1972 AND ENDING IN 1975, OF WHICH PROBABLY LESS THAN 20% STILL SURVIVE DUE TO THE FRAIL NATURE OF THE ORIGINAL OVERSIZED MAILER ***

Zuno Keisatsu is a cult band of the Japanese 70s scene; this is their first release, a very good acoustic live performance, athough not musically mind-blowing. Famous for the left-wing lyrics that leaded to its censure, the album was reissued for its 30th anniversary by an obscure independent Japanese label. During that period, the fame of the band grew significantly as each member took part in solid or skilful collaborations with many other artists from Japan's avant scene. This may be why Zuno Keisatsu stands as a major band if your wish is to understand how alternative music was spreading in the country in these times.Still, there are some awesome moments of folk music and complex congo beats that make it quite an essential release for any fan of Japanese folk music.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

It is almost impossible to imagine how closed Japanese society was to the counter-culture of the late 1960s. Zuno Keisatsu were possibly the most provocative rock group of the Japanese underground, self-releasing this album in 1970. Featuring songs like “Declaration of Global Revolutionary War” and “Grab a Gun” Parts 1 and 2, this strange mixture of Marc Bolan and communal hippie psych jamming was wrapped in an oversized LP package featuring the identikit portrait and blank gaze of the Japanese equivalent of DB Cooper: the main suspect of a still-unsolved legendary multi-million dollar robbery.

(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF ZUNO KEISATSU, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Brain Police (“Zuno Keisatsu”) were one of the most incendiary bands to emerge in the cultural and political turmoil of late 1960s Japan. They took their name from an obscure Frank Zappa song and their bongo-and-guitar driven sound from Marc Bolan.

Their politics came courtesy of  Japan’s  Red Army Faction, a far left grouping that  advocated violent revolution and gave birth to even more extreme grouplets, such as the United Red Army, which killed  12 of its own members in the Asama Lodge incident of 1971.

No major recording company would handle  Brain Police’s first album,  which included ditties such as Declaration of Global Revolutionary War and Grab a Gun Parts 1 and 2. Instead the band released it on their own label in 1970. Their anti-establishment street creed was cemented by the album cover which featured the identikit photo of the criminal genius  behind Japan’s  equivalent of the Great Train Robbery.

Here’s what happened. On December 10th 1968 a security van was en route to the offices of Toshiba to deliver cash for distribution as employee bonuses.  On a quiet backstreet a police motorbike  pulled alongside  the van and flagged it down. The helmeted cop  explained to the security men that police HQ had information about a bomb threat and ordered them out while he examined the underside of the vehicle.

During the “search”, the man in the police uniform planted a small explosive, which went off soon afterwards, then informed the petrified security guys that he would drive the van to an open space and make it safe. They stood there in the street marveling at the man’s bravery as he disappeared into the distance.

The bogus cop was never seen again. Despite a 7 year investigation involving 170,000 police and a list of 110,000 suspects, the crime remains unsolved to this day.

No violence, no accomplices. Just a few props and extraordinary acting ability. The haul – the yen equivalent of $10 million in today’s money.

Brain Police  formed around the two core members of “Panta” Nakamura and Toshi Ishizuka in 1969, the year that Shuji Terayama started Tenjo Sajiki, his avant garde theatre troupe. According to Panta, the only time they met was when Terayama mistakenly stuck his head into a studio where Brain Police were recording.

Several songs from BP’s first two albums were banned from the airwaves,  but subsequently they moved away from radical politics and emphasized more sophisticated and  reflective material, featuring, for example, lyrics based on the poetry of Herman Hesse.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               PLEASE NOTE: OUR CONDITION BELOW  IS FOR THE ORIGINAL 1972 ALBUM ALONE; THE 2002 REISSUE IS IN           VERY GOOD++ (SLEEVE) /NEAR MINT (RECORD) CONDITION

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER (OVERSIZED ORIGINAL MAILER)

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams, particularly along the folding of the lid

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover shows considerable yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover shows considerable, oppressive yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-        Cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
