Description
Here we have the SUPER RARE ORIGINAL 1970 vinyl release of the Wil Malone eponymous album
on the original FONTANA label.
?Catalogue number STL.5541
Wilson Malone
Please read everything in my description here
from top to bottom.
The sleeve is in very good condition.
There is some slight corner rubbing, and a small 5mm oval blip of laminate loss on the back of the sleeve,
probably from where I removed the price sticker in 1972.
The sleeve edges are in very good condition.
There's a small 5mm rub on the bottom edge
(showing in the photo as the white bit at the bottom of Wil's cloak).
Everything I describe is visible in the photos, appearing greatly exaggerated in the close up pictures.
The album is in its original inner sleeve, which has a little 'foxing' (brown marks).
I'm not qualified to professionally grade the record.
However, a friend of mine who is, suggests mint minus for the vinyl
and Ex++ for the sleeve.
I bought the record 40 years ago from new, and have never played it.
There are no spindle marks.
The only time it's been out of the sleeve is for the photos here.
I took the photos in my conservatory and the dark & light marks & shadows on the vinyl
are the reflections from the roof.
It isn't easy to photograph vinyl.
Here’s the story of how I came to own this exceptionally rare LP.
In 1972 I was the guitar player in a band called ‘Samsun’
(later re-named ‘Oscar’), recording at the famous Morgan Studios in Willesden, London.
Our producers were Wil Malone & Geoff Gill.?The band recorded some of Wil’s songs, two of which were released in the UK on the RCA label,? 'Genevieve’ & ‘Mississippi Queen’ RCA 2250.
There was a single released in Holland on the 'Explosion' label,
‘The Wind Talking To The Pines’ & ‘Mississippi Queen’,
both songs written by Wil Malone.
At this time, 1972, I found the Wil Malone album while browsing in a Manchester record shop, and bought it purely because of my association with Wil.?
I was moving house, and I put the record in a box with some old LPs
from my formative years I hadn't played for ages.
That was 40 years ago.
It has stayed in the box ever since, I’ve moved house twice and I totally forgot I had it.
In recent weeks I’ve been collaborating with Andy Votel of ‘Finders Keepers’ Records,
on a CD compilation of 1970s Manchester rock bands, including Samsun & Oscar.
Of course we discussed Wil Malone as Wil was Samsun’s producer & writer.
Andy mentioned that a Wil Malone album was number 4 out of 50, in a recent ‘Record Collector’ list
of the most collectable albums.
My memory jogged, I was prompted to go up to the attic and search through my boxes of old albums, and there it was.
I’ve never ever played it.
I've cut & pasted the following info from: http://peppermintstore.blogspot.co.uk/2008/10/wil-malone-wil-malone-1970.html
Wil Malone is the extremely rare and hard to find psych album from 1970 by Wilson Malone, ex-member of psychedelic outfits Orange Bicycle andMotherlight.
According to music industry legend the LP was only available for two months in 1970 and sold in the region of 200 copies, it is also said that fewer than 30 copies have been known to exist or offered for sale in the last 20 years. An original copy sold recently at ebay for £2.150!!!
Released on Fontana, catalogue number STL5541.??This superb record is reminiscent of a psychedelic Donovan but with a more baroque/pop feel. Using simple arrangements of cello, flute bass and acoustic guitar Wil Malone gently recites his fragile pastoral folk-like songs that are embellished with a beautiful production and the odd subtle studio effect (such as on the ghostly and trippy "Love In the Afternoon") A true forgotten classic somewhere in the no man's land between psychedelia and singer songwriter.??Cover artwork by the great Vertigo artist Keef.??Tracks
