Despite the fact that the listing includes an amazing 1st US Mono pressing copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico in outstanding condition I’d like to draw your attention and begin its description with an incredibly rare original issue of “KRLA BEAT” weekly newspaper published on May 21, 1966. Survived to this day in beautiful condition, on its last page the newspaper contains an event advert for Andy Warhol’s “Smash Scene from N.Y. THE PLASTIC INEVITABLE SHOW” featuring “The Velvet Underground and Nico, and the M.F.Q.” at ”The Trip” Hollywood night club. The Exploding Plastic Inevitable, sometimes simply called Plastic Inevitable or EPI, was a series of multimedia events organized by Andy Warhol in 1966 and 1967, featuring musical performances by The Velvet Underground & Nico, screenings of Warhol's films, and dancing and performances by regulars of Warhol's Factory. Once in a while you could come across a reprint of this advert, but the original listed up for an auction here is an incredible rarity and it belongs in a museum. The band’s visit to Los Angeles wasn’t only limited to The Plastic Inevitable Show as it was during this time when The Velvet Underground & Nico signed the contract with MGM / Verve Records and returned to a studio, the TTG in Hollywood, where for reasons unknown they rerecorded “Heroine”, “Venus in Furs”, “I’m Waiting For The Man” and recorded the new song “Sunday Morning”. This insanely rare “KRLA BEAT” 11½” x 15” 16-page newspaper example with an advert for Andy Warhol’s “The Plastic Inevitable Show” is an integral part of these historic events. ★ Now, concerning the album copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico, which is also included in the listing. To say that finding a copy of this album in such an amazing condition is impossible wouldn’t be an exaggeration. Original 1st state gatefold “Torso” cover with a photo of the band and a large upside down image of the actor Eric Emerson projected on the wall behind it, taken during a Plastic Inevitable Show event, on the back. Having recently been arrested for drug possession and desperate for money, Emerson threatened to sue over this unauthorized use of his image, unless he was paid. Rather than complying, MGM recalled copies of the album and halted its distribution until Emerson's image could be airbrushed from the photo on subsequent pressings. Original 1st print blue / silver Verve Records 1¼” pressing ring misprint labels with the V-5008 Mono catalog number indicate the timing for the “Black Angel’s Death Song” track as 3:10 as opposed to the correct one of 3:01. Very early 1st Mono mix pressing vinyl with the block-looking “S” symbol, indicating the very early pressing by MGM Records manufacturing division, Bloomfield, New Jersey. The full matrix numbers are as a follows: V-5008 SIDE 1 MG558 Rev 1C Block-Looking "S" / V5008 SIDE 2 MG559 1 2 8. The album comes with an original "The Jazz of America is on Verve / The Wit of America is on Verve" inner sleeve with red text. ★ The beautiful cover and original Verve Records inner sleeve are in in Near Mint condition. I grade the vinyl as Strong Very Good Plus. It retains its magnificent factory gloss, but has some very light surface hairlines, marks and scuffs from the inner sleeve. The labels are in Excellent condition, scuff- and wear-free, only having some light spindle marks seen under a strong light source. The vinyl plays well throughout, having some light background noise and a series of light pops in a couple of places, which is most likely just static that could get reduced or go away if the record is professionally cleaned with a VPI cleaning machine. The original "KRLA BEAT" newspaper is in great vintage condition with all of the pages intact.
