THE LAYABOUTS

I DON’T CARE/WE’LL MEET AGAIN

(ZODIAC Z45/1244) (RELEASED 1966)

Auckland group who formed in 1962 as an instrumental ‘Shadows’ style outfit, eventually adding vocals and turning into a Stones/Pretty Things style band (ie raucous and gritty!) Apparently the band didn’t want to be known as a pop band, adopting a rather scruffy and aloof appearance! Well, they only released the one, solitary single and what a gem it is….

‘I Don’t Care’ deserves recognition as an incredibly wyld garage beat thumper in the vein of the Pretty Things. I can’t say that I’ve seen this track comped on the various NZ Garage/Beat compilations over the years, but would not be out of place on the various ‘Wyld Things’ anthologies.

‘We’ll Meet Again’ is the traditional standard, the group probably sourcing this from the Byrd’s first album the previous year, as ringing guitars are prominent and performed in true folk-rock style.

Record = VG-/VG (Visually VG- lots of hairlines, some scuffing, but plays VG on the prime side, 'I Don't Care' with some crackling that’s not too bad. B side (VG-) has some heavier crackling around the middle of the song. Pressed on heavy, thick vinyl and plays well, typical of NZ pressings in the 60's)

Zodiac labels in very good condition.

This is now an extremely sought after record as it rarely appears for sale.

Overall, an item in acceptable condition and an enjoyable listen.
