†Brief Info: This is a contender for the rarest record I have ever had to offer. This is reputed only to exist as a white label Test Pressing with around 50 (±) thought to have been made – and how many still even exist? The album was recorded by the band in 1969, but for contractual reasons, it was shelved in the UK, and not issued here on vinyl at all. Rumoured only to be white label copies, but this one goes a step further. This massively pressed CBS record has genuine CBS orange labels both sides as seen. No covers were ever made here, but this did get a brief and limited release in the United States under the new title of ‘Funky’. Here is was to be called (as the labels clearly state) ‘Letters From Edith’, and is the only record pressed in this era that will look like this. This ‘lost’ record looks very little played as well, any surface marks or blemishes very small, few and faint and sound quality is very impressive and clean. It includes the aged inner sleeve with a taped ‘PROPERTY OF C.B.S. label where it has been stored for decades. A record that will rarely, if ever surface – with research, it appears only one has been sold before from an auction site – that back in 2004. A major rarity by a big-name act, and one for serious collectors – this has a vast catalogue ‘value’, but how can a definitive price for such ‘lost’ piece be ascertained? For such an item, I have to make a rare exception of my usual low-start protocol. I normally start all my auctions at £14 and let the market dictate the value of any album, with no safety-net or fixed minimum profits – I usually let my judgement of cost-to-sale potential take it’s natural course – some I win, some I draw, some I lose. But this one I have on approval from the owner, and the asking price is considerable – if it does not sell, it can be returned (or offered to a dealer who specialises in such pieces). It WILL NOT be relisted. The minimum selling price is still way under the book value anyway. So you have a chance to own quite possibly one of the rarest ever UK-made albums on a major label. With just one recorded copy sold in the last 11 years, will another ever surface again? You decide, a possible one-off and very rare opportunity.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and massively pressed at way over average weight even for a 1960s record. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality is better than excellent to superb throughout with no distortion and minimal traces of any surface sound. Tracking effortless* with fantastic detail within these almost unique deep grooves. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors. Will a copy of this ever surface again on the open market?

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
