Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 284/500!

Numbered, Limited Edition! Half-speed Mastered From the Original Analog Tapes!

One of the most successful and enjoyable debuts in history, The Cars’ self-titled album doubles as a greatest-hits collection. That’s because not one song here is unrecognized or unknown. A huge reason why the Boston quintet became America’s most popular new-wave band, The Cars launched eight tracks still regularly heard on radio stations everywhere. Consider the hit list: "You’re All I’ve Got Tonight," "Good Times Roll," "Just What I Needed," "Moving in Stereo," "My Best Friend’s Girl," and "Don’t Cha Stop." If you’re a fan of pop music, this album is a must-have. Just call it the best new-wave rock album ever made.

Led by Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr, the Cars managed to unite then-disparate styles: bubblegum pop melodies, angular art rock, progressive arrangements, and terse minimalism. Orr’s low, understated singing and Ocasek’s cool, detached vocals lend shades of doubt and double meaning to the lyrics, which are further counterbalanced by orchestral keyboard flourishes and electronic beats. The brilliant arrangements also benefit from a laidback cool and understated irony that remain uncommon in the over-the-top world of mainstream music. Obsessed with incorporating the latest technologies and sounds into its palette, the band spiced its tunes with delightfully quirky accents—country-tinged guitar fills, echoing Syndrums, reggae splashes, hard-rock tones and robotic pulses.

The results are the sounds of a creative landmark. At once accessible and eccentric, edgy and catchy, The Cars explode with emotion, energy, and hooks. It’s impossible not to get caught up humming and singing along to every song, an appeal that comes courtesy of Roy Thomas Baker’s stellar production. The legendary producer, best known for his work with Queen, ensured that the record seamlessly packed a smooth midrange, spacious imaging, and call-and-answer choruses in one tight package. Baker’s trademark touches with harmony vocals abound.

And now, The Cars sounds better than it has in any previous incarnation. Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition LP allows the music’s oscillating rhythms, futuristic keyboard passages, panned stereo images, and rippling textures to be experienced like never before. The songs take on a surreal quality, the Cars manipulating the vibrant music at will to mesmerize the listeners’ senses and hold them at bay. Mobile Fidelity’s unparalleled pressing epitomizes the sensation of "moving in stereo"!

"We used to joke that the first album should be called The Cars' Greatest Hits," said lead guitarist Elliot Easton. The Cars' 1978 debut was arty and punchy enough to be part of Boston's New Wave scene and yet so catchy that nearly every track — "My Best Friend's Girl," "Just What I Needed" — landed on the radio." - rollingstone

The Cars Candy-O Numbered Limited Edition 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE LP

Michael Fremer Rated 8/10 Music, 9/10 Sonics!

Numbered, Limited Edition! Half-Speed Mastered From Original Master Tapes!

The Cars' 1979 sophomore album, now on Mobile Fidelity Half-speed mastered 180g vinyl, is a must-hear new-wave classic.

How did the Cars move beyond their smash 1978 debut (also available on Mobile Fidelity 180-gram LP, and secure their status as one of music’s leading bands for years to come? Look no further than the quadruple-platinum "Candy-O". Continuing along the streamlined pop paths of its predecessor, the sophomore effort is preoccupied with desirable women that are as mysterious, sexy, and cool as the group’s music—and the record’s pin-up cover.

With rare exception, few new-wave artists enjoyed much of a career outside of a one-hit wonder. "Candy-O" proves the Cars were anything but. It’s loaded with minimalist atmospherics, pulsing bass lines, catchy refrains, and labyrinthine synthesizers that stick in your mind for days. And while retaining a simplicity that’s a Cars hallmark, the album also takes myriad stylistic detours: the glam-rock accents of "Dangerous Type," a song whose title references the record’s mysterious and lusty matter; the percolating riffs of the contagious title track; the dizzying garage-rock nature of the upbeat "Got a Lot on My Mind," complete with a tooting Farfisa organ. Nothing drags or feels out of place.

Through it all, vocalists Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek keep their heads about themselves, singing in direct albeit detached tones that convey the tension, excitement, and risky promise inherent in the lyrics. Hook-laced choruses abound. Yet all is not what it seems.

Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition LP brings the Cars’ distinctive melodies and exotic arrangements to the fore in ways that have never been heard outside of the recording studio. For the first time, Roy Thomas Baker’s vocal production shines, with each member’s contributions rescued from a cold sonic murk that detracted from the music’s impact on both vinyl and the extremely compressed CD. Once you hear the newly uncovered dynamics and rich textures, you’ll be wondering where they were all of these years. Chalk this up as an essential addition to your pop collection.

"Hooks are mechanical by nature, but the affectlessness of these deserves special mention; only listeners who consider 'alienation is the craze' a great insight will find much meaning here. On the other hand, only listeners who demand meaning in all things will find this useless. Cold and thin, shiny and hypnotic, it's what [the Cars] do best--rock and roll that is definitely pop without a hint of cuteness." - Robert Christgau, The Consumer Guide

"Dynamics are much improved on Candy-O, being consistently punchy and engaging. Drums in particular are rendered with greater realism, especially when you consider the already “larger than life“ inherent production values. Thankfully the cymbals are reproduced cleanly without being overly bright. The new mastering also provides better treble and bass extension, along with a wider and deeper soundstage. Heck, there is even some space around Ocasek's vocals. Background instrumentals are also better separated in the mix." /b>- Michael Fremer, analogplanet., Music 8/10, Sound 9/10!

CARS SHAKE IT UP Numbered, Limited Edition! Half-Speed Mastered From Original Master Tapes!

MoFi’s sonically spectacular LP half-speed mastered from the original tapes! The 1981 debut album is a return to pop and a new-wave landmark.

A return to form after the departure that was 1980's muddled Panorama, the Cars Shake It Up bursts forth with a rich assembly of synthesizers, drum machines, electronic blips, and catchy melodies that make it an early '80s pop staple. Known the world over, the famous title track proves the band’s arrangement skills were in perfect shape and set the stage for a record overflowing with memorable hooks and complementary rock riffs.

Shake It Up also plays witness to primary songwriter/vocalist Ric Ocasek’s increased cynicism and biting wit. While the Cars never took a rosy-eyed view of romance, the songs here impart a newfound sense of sympathy, regret, limbo, and reservation. The beauty of the Car’s and all ten tunes here’is that the music suggests something else entirely. Such subliminal emotions and dynamic contrasts act as a magnet, and the band plays as if it’s in on the secret.

The bands arrangements have never been better or more involved. Absent the cheesiness that would mar the groups late-period work, the songs ride on the strength of keyboard-heavy lines and layered harmonies.

Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition LP focuses on the myriad pitch changes that control the musical directions. Recorded at the bands Synchro Sound studios by famed Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker, the album takes advantage of electronic textures and varying timbres in immersing the listener in accessible albeit abstract washes of sound. MoFi’s engineers made sure to capture every note and nuance; this marks the first time that Shake It Up has been remastered in any way, let alone from the original tapes.

They've always cultivated a dark side--girls make boys want to end it all even after the boys have grown up. They've always basked in the shadow of Roxy Music, too. But they've never been so stylishly nightmarish--except for the title cut, even the fast ones don't aim for fun. Robert Christgau, The Consumer Guide

CARS HEARTBEAT CITU Numbered, Limited Edition! Half-Speed Mastered From Original Master Tapes!

Limited, numbered 180-gram gatefold LP reissue

1984 will always be remembered for the debut of the Macintosh computer, the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the ascent of MTV as the most powerful cultural medium of the era. The year is also recognized for the Cars’ savvy contributions not only to the burgeoning music-video channel but to pop itself. Released in April, the four-times platinum Heartbeat City ultimately spawned five Top 40 singles — four of them landing in the Top 20, two in the Top 10 — and serve as the final memorable record from the Boston group, which disbanded in 1987.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited edition 180-gram LP of Heartbeat City revisits the landmark album via a rich fidelity unmatched by any prior edition. Signifying the first time the set has been available on vinyl in nearly three decades, this reissue opens up the soundstages, decongests the low frequencies, and shines a spotlight on Mutt Lange’s pinpoint balances and glossy hooks. Indeed, the now-household-name producer would make a lasting mark with Heartbeat City, whose radio-friendly sound, multi-layered textures, and smooth, suave, synth-heavy pulses set a precedent for the period’s hit-making pop.

Overflowing with a surfeit of finger-snapping beats, electro-pop effects, streamlined guitar notes, and bright melodies, Heartbeat City trades in efficiency, catchiness, and to-the-point craftiness. Unlike most mid-80s records, the electronic effects and sleek tonalities aren’t dated due to both the focused production and irresistible songwriting. Leader Ric Ocasek penned all ten tunes, and while a mind-boggling five charted in the Top 40, what makes Heartbeat City such a staple is the fact that it’s easy to imagine every song on it crashing the Billboard Hot 100. Call it the new-wave version of Thriller.

Indeed, the record’s track list automatically triggers a mental jukebox. The spare simplicity and hopefulness of "Magic." The simultaneously sad longing and soothing somberness of the Benjamin Orr-sung "Drive." The shimmer and shuffling riff of "You Might Think." The ping-pong bounce and futuristic paranoia of "Hello Again." The atmospheric, arty title track. Heartbeat City is a veritable lesson in pop tunesmithship.
